Plane Crashes in Prison Yard of Facility in Norco, CA (Flying Wing!)

Authorities are responding to a plane crash in the prison yard of a facility in Riverside County, according to preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration.

About 12:10 p.m., the Riverside County Sheriff's Department received reports of an "air emergency" along the 1900 block of 4th Street in Norco.

Only the pilot was in the Northrop N9M when it crashed, the FAA said in an email to KTLA, citing local authorities.

No injuries were reported on the ground, but the aircraft "sustained substantial damage," the FAA said.

Aerial video from Sky5 showed charred ground where the plane appears to have crashed. Remnants of a wheel could be seen.

No further details about the incident were released, but the Sheriff's Department tweeted that the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating.

They had the escape planned right down to the second Louie would grab a hold of the wing and they would swoop right out to freedom. They forgot to add the factor of a wall.

a plane crash in the prison yard

From a free bird to jail bird, just like that.

It's a weird little world out there.

I got to see it fly right after they finished the restoration.

Personally, I'm against flying these historic, one of a kind aircraft. Once they're gone, that's it.

This sounds like something Wile E. Coyote might try!

I think it was a job in Nevada - there was a mailbox with that name on the side, stuck in the middle of 50 miles of nowhere!

Really.

Non-weird would have been a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

No, no, Big Bubba, the escape plan was supposed to be a helicopter!

There have been two small plane crashes in the Hill Country of Texas the past two days. All died. Prayers.

That was the 1/3-scale proof of concept for the XB-35.

Now, it's a pile of lumber,

According to Wiki this was the last one left of four built.

More like a pile of ashes.

I am torn between putting them in a museum or letting them be flown. I love to see history fly, but like you said, if it is a one off...perhaps it should stay grounded.

More like a pile of ashes.

Yep. Nothing left to rebuild. What didn't get destroyed in the crash burned up in the resulting fire.

Here's KTLA video of the area.

Are any of Northrop’s “flying wings” from the 1940s still around?
What ever happened to the YB-49 and the XB-35?

Flying wings are a very efficient design until they're not. Some are prone to pitch instability in situations where a a traditional tailed or even a canard design would recover easily enough.

Then again, if you have crappy software it's not going to make any difference. Ask Boeing.

I vote for the museum myself.

I wish they had axed before they went and crashed it though... Whomever they are.
