13 American Airlines passengers hospitalized with puzzling illness

The group had been visiting the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador before passing through Miami, an American Airlines rep told the outlet. Three other members reported feeling ill but were not hospitalized.

A chaperone told American that the 13 “ate the same thing” before falling sick. No one else on the flight showed symptoms, according to the airline.

Officials described the symptoms as mild — though they were not immediately sure what caused them.
