So what was the reason? I don’t feel like watching a damned video when 50 words is sufficient.

nothing new, the software doomed the plane. the sensors which feed the computer were faulty too. Amd the pilots weren’t trained on the nee software. imagine takingvyou car in for a manufactures software safety recall upgrade. as you are driving home the car starts speeding up when you take the foot of the gas the car keeps speeding up. you hit the brakes and they slow the car but it still sppeds up . these planes nosed down to prevent what thee sensors thought was a stall condition. computer drove the plane into the ground..

Video is actually pretty good. They do a good job of explaining what they believe the problem to be.

Your loss. The video isn’t long, about 7 minutes.

I’m with you. I can read 500 words of text faster than a video presenter can speak 500 words at a spead you can hear and understand every word.

Plane is too low to the ground for its larger engines, so they raised the engines slightly above the wings, which makes the plane want to go nose-up. Software is supposed to correct that by pushing the nose down, but at takeoff the nose should go up.

Summarized from blancolirio's excellent explanation on YouTube:

The 8,000 hour Ethiopian Airlines Captain forgot to turn off the autothrottles when they started having problems with MCAS. All attempts to fix the stabilizer trim were thus attempted at takeoff power. Therefore, even though they did try to do the right thing and switch to manual, they were unable to control the stabilizer trim manually due to the plane traveling at 500 mph. They turned the autopilot back on to try to get back some control and used the yoke switch to cut off MCAS...for nine seconds, as designed. Whereupon the crew apparently lost concentration due to the crisis, MCAS came back on, it used the faulty sensor reading that had started the problems, and it dived the plane straight into the ground - still at full power.

Poor software design by Boeing, but the genesis of the accident was a boneheaded mistake by the flight crew that it is hard to imagine any American airline crew making. There is going to be a lot of finger pointing.

Exactly, and those of us whom have followed this understand, and know what happened, BUT far left wing VOX whom produced this video being whom they are has turned this tragedy into a political anti capitalist statement.

Their point isn’t an error in judgement was made by Boeing, but that the real reason was capitalism/competition killed all those people, and the World would be a better place if only government was in charge of every aspect of life.

Lefties at work.

A picture is worth a 1,000 words. A video is worth 10,000. if you are expecting an explanation in 50 words, you will get 0.5% of what this 5 minute video gives you.

So you aren’t smart enough to summarize. Check.

Nah... just smart enough to explain some basic facts and math to you. Oh and by the way, in the wasted time, you could have watched the video....

wHO. And if you can’t decide which to use, who or whom, use who. If it is wrong it still sounds okay. Whom when used wrong comes off clunky as hell.

My summary (not that I necessarily agree with the the explanation):

A new larger engine was designed to be put on the old Boeing 737 plane design. It was too large to be installed below the wing’s surface of the Boeing 737 Max 8, but Boeing moved it up higher and part of it was above the wing surface. This sometimes caused the nose of the plan to point too high at takeoff and risked stalling out the plane.

To compensate, Boeing installed a software system to push the nose down to prevent it from stalling out by rising too high. It was called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System or MCAS.

Because the basic 737 plane itself was not changed all that much, Boeing did not highlight the new MCAS and pilots only got two-hour iPad training on the new plane before entering the cockpit the first time. And the training material didn’t mentioned the MCAS software.

On October 29, 2018 Lion Air flight 610 took off from Jakarta Indonesia, and had trouble with the nose frequently turning down — this was presumably caused by the MCAS software. The pilots could not figure out what was causing it and how to stop it. The plane was getting incorrect sensor data that caused this and it crashed 12 minutes after take off.

In the case of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10. 2019, after the flight took off the pilots disabled the MCAS system because it was causing the nose of the plane to tilt down. But it was too late. It crashed.

The narrator claims Boeing was so eager to beat Airbus they were negligent in design and training on the new engine and MCAS software and the FAA was negligent in approving the design. Airbus had built a larger engine that was more fuel efficient. But because its Airbus A320 model was higher off the ground than Boeing’s 737, there was room on the Airbus for the larger engine to hang under neat the wing as its smaller engine was able to do on the old model.

Yeah. . .and turning off the MCAS resulted in the third-world “pilots” discovering they can’t fly. . .we’ve flown jets without auto-pilots and AOA indicators since the Wright brothers to today.

System breaks, turn it off and fly the darned jet. Too much for third-world aircrew apparently.

Reported one “pilot” had 200hrs. . .and that’s not enough time to be an commercial instrument rated pilot in the US, let alone the standards to fly for a reputable airline (ATP).

” as you are driving home the car starts speeding up when you take the foot of the gas the car keeps speeding up.”

Happened to me. Put the car in neutral, pulled over and turned it off. No big deal. I hope you have learned what to do now if it happens to you.

Interesting that in both planes pilots were able to defeat the MCAS.

In the Lion Air crash the pilot controlled the plane for five minutes then handed it off to the copilot that lost it. Pilots in the same plane turned off the MCAS the day before.

In the Ethiopia crash, the pilot turned off the MCAS but strangely turned it back on and crashed.

Wrong.

For safety sake, I don’t believe a country should be sold a vehicle they can’t design and make for themselves.

If it’s beyond their ability to design and manufacture, it’s beyond their ability to maintain and operate.

Turn it off and fly the jet manually. . .they did not do that. . .beyond their skill capability. . .if they had any air-sense or judgment. . .and auto-throttles being ignored by the flight crew is downright ignorant and unskilled.

“2,000” hrs? Was that 2,000 hours of the same hour repeated over and over again, and what were their certification qualifications to be rated in the aircraft.

Look, I have no loyalty towards Boeing, worked nearly 10-yrs with them and they are not into building jets that they know will fail. Build a jet that you know will fail is a sure way to get sued out of existence and lose the market. . .no airline wants to buy a jet that fails.

“This video explains really well. “

Stopped watching as the video is WRONG on why the MCAS was installed.
