Privileged (Utah Jazz Player Kyler Korver's Essay on His Own White Privilege)
The Players Tribune ^ | April 8, 2019 | Kyle Korver

hen the police break your teammate’s leg, you’d think it would wake you up a little.

When they arrest him on a New York street, throw him in jail for the night, and leave him with a season-ending injury, you’d think it would sink in. You’d think you’d know there was more to the story.

You’d think.

But nope.

I still remember my reaction when I first heard what happened to Thabo. It was 2015, late in the season. Thabo and I were teammates on the Hawks, and we’d flown into New York late after a game in Atlanta. When I woke up the next morning, our team group text was going nuts. Details were still hazy, but guys were saying, Thabo hurt his leg? During an arrest? Wait — he spent the night in jail?! Everyone was pretty upset and confused.

Well, almost everyone. My response was….. different. I’m embarrassed to admit it.

Which is why I want to share it today.

Before I tell the rest of this story, let me just say real quick — Thabo wasn’t some random teammate of mine, or some guy in the league who I knew a little bit. We’d become legitimate friends that year in our downtime. He was my go-to teammate to talk with about stuff beyond the basketball world. Politics, religion, culture, you name it — Thabo brought a perspective that wasn’t typical of an NBA player. And it’s easy to see why: Before we were teammates in Atlanta, the guy had played professional ball in France, Turkey and Italy. He spoke three languages! Thabo’s mother was from Switzerland, and his father was from South Africa. They lived together in South Africa before Thabo was born, then left because of apartheid.

I’ve never spent a night in jail...because I obey the law.

This concept of priviledge, applied only to white people, in a world that is 90% dark people, is the perfect example of the “big lie”.

My brothers story was somewhat like this one, he and a co-workers flew home late, too many drinks, the guy gets pulled over and starts mouthing off to the police, my brother says, um my car is just over there can I go home they said sure.

The guy shows up at work 3 days later with a broken arm asking my brother if he knows how it happened.

My point is I think we may not have all of the story on this one.

Why is there not affirmative action in the NBA so that it better reflects the ethnic makeup of America?

“I’ve never spent a night in jail...because I obey the law.”

It’s as simple as that.

“I’ve never spent a night in jail...because I obey the law.”

Mr. Sefolosha had not broken the law, either. That’s why New York City had to pay him $4m dollars.

Funny, not a single word in the entire story about WHY he was arrested, WHAT he was arrested for, HOW the police managed to break his lead, WHAT he was doing to cause the police to use such force. Not one word.

Just page after page of white guilt. Sounds like this guy has a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome.

Does white privilege include being loathes by non-whites?

Does it include being denied admission into your college of choice even though your test scores are higher than those minorities accepted with lower academic credentials.

Does white privilege include being driven from your neighborhood because government funded housing for minorities has turned into a crime-ridden nightmare?

Does white privilege include having your pocket picked by the government for the advancement of minorities?

Does white privilege include being bussed to school miles from your home into dangerous neighborhoods and forced to go to school with a dumbed down curriculum?

Does white privilege include being blamed to the end of your days for atrocities you had no hand in that occurred generations ago?

Oh, and if the police broke my teammates leg, I have to wonder first whether he was a punk to the police like I see on LivePD and COPS during every episode. Too many blacks have a bias at the outset dealing with police and they end up actively provoking coos, resisting arrest and sometimes attacking cops.

There are dirty cops but the vast majority don’t want any trouble and if they can, will give you a pass if you’re respectful and sincere. But the sad fact is that too many blacks have no respect for the law.

Yes. It includes all of the above, plus the moral imperative to pay reparations til the end of time.

White privilege is actually much more subtle and clever.

For example, you may receive an email at work indicating that in the event of an emergency you may be asked to “stay in place”.

They don’t that email to white people.

Kyle is a gentleman and one of the great shooters of all time. It sounds like he’s been grabbed by some friends who gave him a dose of social justice syrup.
His proposed solutions are off target and focused on symptoms, not the core issues.

Maybe, maybe not.

Your linke reads:

In his statement, Mr. Paolucci said: “This settlement is not a concession that Mr. Sefolosha was blameless in this matter and there was no admission of liability by the defendants, but in light of the gravity of his injuries, the potential impact on his career as a professional athlete and the challenge for a jury in sorting out the facts in this incident, the resolution of the case was in the best interests of the city.”

According to court papers, the parties reached an agreement after Judge Jesse M. Furman of Federal District Court in Manhattan proposed a settlement amount at the end of a conference on March 30. Judge Furman officially dismissed the case on Wednesday.

It sounds to me that they figured $4 million paid out now was better than gambling on a possible $20 million+ settlement later

Does white privilege include being elected to the presidency and treated like a racist pariah simply because he’s not groveling to the party that represents minorities?

He committed the crime of simply asking whether Obama was a citizen, which last time I asked, was a requirement to be President? Trump had to trot out Kanye West just to calm down the furor at the beginning of his presidency.

There are minorities that oppress white people. And more oppression is to come.

The number of ‘educated’ people, especially black sportswriters who might be some of the leftiest lefties on the planet, who praised this silly exercise in self flaggelation is staggering.
