Serbia’s Protests Aren’t the Beginning of a Balkan Spring

Although temperatures in the Balkans are rising, neither budding flowers nor mass protests should be mistaken for the beginning of a Balkan Spring modeled on the revolutions that rocked the Arab world in 2011.

The protesters’ main problem is that they’re unable to apply any political pressure on the government by rallying around a candidate that might threaten Vucic’s stranglehold on national politics.

The entirety of the anti-Vucic ideological spectrum is represented—from student Marxists to Bosko Obradovic, the ultranationalist leader of Dveri, a far-right opposition party of religious conservatives—sometimes causing scuffles among the protesters. This highlights the fragmented and impotent nature of the Serbian opposition, which is united by its opposition to Vucic but unable to agree on much else.

The anti-Vucic movement is also hamstrung by the fact that all the opposition alternatives are deeply divisive and unpopular.

Post Soviet Balkans are all against all. It is not simply Orthodox against everyone else. There were plenty of Muslim and Catholic extremism if you prefer to sort scum by their religion. In fact Orthodox are who suffered the most at hands of others.

“In fact Orthodox are who suffered the most at hands of others.”

There is a nice new movie ‘Balkan line’ surprisingly produced by by 20th century fox. It is aimed at East European audience though so I am not sure if there is English version. The best feature description of Kosovo affair to date.

Thanks, is the view there a ‘bit different’ than the propaganda we were fed regarding Kosovo?

In fact it is rather accurate as far as it is possible for a feature movie.
