A newly discovered fossil site in China that dates back 518 million years contains more than 50% previously unknown species, according to a new study. The well-preserved Qingjiang site is helping scientists to fill gaps in the fossil record and provide a clearer picture of some of the earliest animal ecosystems.

The site is unique in that it not only includes well-preserved fossils but soft-bodied organisms as well. Some of the animals include corals, sponges, sea anemones, jellyfish, comb jellies, arthropods and tiny invertebrates called mud dragons, as well as microscopic fossils.

Interesting.

There are still things we don't know.

Sounds like a new Burgess Shale type of deposit, just a little younger. The Cambrian was a massive bloom of new creatures, finding another source ought to be enlightning.

You got that right.
We know less about our own earth than we do about the moon, stars and other planets.

BUNK!!!!

Any time you find a fossil midway between two known species, you do not fill the gap, you create (there's that word) two new gaps on either side of it!

“I would have guessed 517 million years but what do I know?”

You’re confused by the odd numbers because they converted from metric time to imperial time.

I’d have to rely on faith that these fossils are 518000000 years old.

I don’t think I have as much faith as you. 😁

Could it be that there have been a bit more than 6000 years since Adam became fully human like us? to be such, he would have been expelled from the presence of the tree of Life. I haven't a clue as to how long he and Eve existed before they were expelled, but the expulsion should time out to about 6000 years give or take.

We ahev it on good authority that God does not create things to trick us, so the measuring systems we have tell us that the planet is about 3 1/2 billion years in existence.

Now if the 'constants' we depend upon to set our gauges are changing or have had major changes, then all bets are off. But my guess is that even the speed of light in a vacuum has slowed considerably since the beginning of the Universe. The rules of entropy tell us the Universe is cooling down, so the whole shebang has to be older than 6000 years.

I'm open to that possibility. I recall hearing Dr. Gene Scott discussing who Adam's kids married by saying there were people on earth before Adam. He maintained Adam was different, the first spiritual man, as opposed to the little more than animal men, Adam was different, God breathed spiritual life into him.

That's one way of reconciling a long fossil record with James Ussher's chronology.

Another is that Ussher miscalculated or failed to take some largish chunk of time into account. After all, he was a mere mortal, not an infallible author of the Bible.

Hey boycott. Re your missing the date of the site by one million year. Well as Don Adams would say, “Missed it by THAT MUCH”.

“Give a million; take a million.”

To which Hillary Clinton would say, “What difference does it make now”?

You should see my Cambrian trilobites (Fruitville Quarry shale, outside of Lancaster - Olenellus -feathery-like legs, about 8 inches long). And my Moroccan Cambrian trilobite is even bigger.

As my geology teacher used to say, “Love them critters”.

I just used to say, “I dig them”.

So would this find be late precambrian or early Cambrian?

This is Cambrian. The Burgess Shales are dated from 508 my ago with this new find at approximately 518 my ago.
