Trade War: 1 Million Lbs of Smuggled Chinese Meat Seized in NJ Amid Swine Plague

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials seized 1 million pounds of pork products at the Newark, New Jersey maritime point of entry Friday. The meat is believed to have been smuggled from China, where there is currently an outbreak of the African swine fever (ASF).

During a Friday news conference, officials announced the seizure of over 50 shipping containers containing pork products.

"Agriculture specialists made a critical interception of these prohibited animal products, and stopped them from entering the US before they could potentially cause grave damage," Troy Miller, director of CBP field operations for the cities of New York and Newark, announced, NewJersey.com reported.

The ASF virus, while posing little threat to humans, is deadly for pig populations. In January, China reported an outbreak of the disease on a pig farm partly owned by a Danish investment fund, Reuters reported at the time.

The farm is the largest to have been affected by the disease, and since that time over 100 farms across China were infected beginning in August 2018. Over 200,000 pigs on infected farms were subsequently culled, Reuters reported.

China possesses about 57% of the world’s pigs.

I read the article. And nowhere is there any reference to the people involved in the shipment. Why do we never read about anyone being indicted for this sort of criminal act? We see to be the country that’s only good at sweeping the guilty under the rug so no one ever knows who they are.

ANY disruption of ANY food chain in ANY nation will cause havoc and perhaps destruction to that nation.

We're suffering through some bee degradation as I type and another attack on our food supply would prove devastating ... especially a year or two in.

We gave up pork entirely. For many reasons including this one.

Truly, you can live without bacon. And there’s turkey bacon if you can’t. Not as tasty, but not as dangerous either.

Pigs are only a minor concern

The 3rd Opium War has been heating up

China is getting some payback for the the obscene profits the Americans made on the deaths of the Chinese

FDR’s dad made his fortune from the Opium Trade in China

The Chinese are not our friends. It’s my belief that the greatest amount of fentanyl is made in China. https://www.pharmacytimes.com/publications/issue/2018/august2018/illegally-produced-fentanyl-a-growing-cause-of-synthetic-opioid-deaths This site says smaller amounts of higher-purity fentanyl originate in China. Well, OK. Some of it gets to Mexico where it is cut, whereupon it becomes lower potency;

Anyone who thinks the Chinese give a s**t about US fentanyl deaths any more than some scumbag Mexican drug lord is delusional.

I agree. Why are we illegally smuggling or importing pig meat into this country from China?

ANYHOW, I was trying to say...and the point being that while China has increased it's domestic pork capacity, we taught them how to do it. One of the first exports after Nixon opened up trade in the 70s was hog confinements, even to the point of chartered cargo jets hauling over precast concrete sections until their factories were in place. Now the are #1 but the US is a strong #2 and there is no reason we cannot produce all the pork we need without importing anything.

The FBI publishes the indictments on their web sit as soon as thy have identified specific people to indict. It may take a little while to trace the shipment to specific people on bth ends of the scheme because smugglers tend not to smuggle in their own names.

Me too. About the time the Chinese bought out our largest pork producer, I noticed it was nearly impossible to find pork in the meat case that hadn't been "injected with up to 15% of a solution." And of course there's also the usual litany of problems with Chinese goods . . .
