BMW Keeps Its Title as America's Top Auto Exporter by Value

BMW announced this week that, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, it again leads America in automotive exports by sales value. This is thanks to the plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, BMW’s biggest global plant and the producer of most of its X crossovers and SUVs.

BMW said the plant—which makes all the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 models and their M and hybrid versions sold worldwide—exported 234,689 cars abroad in 2018, a value of more than $8.4 billion. BMW said 356,749 SUVs were made there in total.

In 1970 our college German prof, was telling us how much better made his BMW was than American cars. He was probably right.

After class it began to rain and as I was walking through the parking lot, I saw him trying to get his windshield wiper to work.

He saw me and said that it always seems to happen. He knew what I was thinking.

I had no idea there even was a plant here.

I would imagine at this point that very, very few cars get all their parts and are produced in one country.

But having a plant here is great.

There small SUVs like the X3 are really nice but too pricey for me.

Excellent! I’m convinced there’s plenty of opportunity to manufacture stuff in the USA.

My Son in Law works for Rolls Royce turbines.
The Brits consider the USA as their version of Mexico.
Even unionized US labor is cheap compared to England.

Is Hennessey still the biggest rip-off artist in the tuner biz? I know a few years ago all the specialist press was reporting his swindling of customers.

I do not see any Ground Effects in that image to keep the vehicle from going airborne.

If you’re willing to keep putting parts in them you’ll love BMW’s (I do).

If you have young members in your family who want to make a good amount of money fast, Spartanberg SC is the place to go.

BMW, Michelin and others are all hiring now. Greenville County, right next door, is building apartment complexes like crazy.

It’s lots of physical labor on the production line, but you will earn big paychecks for a person fresh out of high school.

This is a good area to work for young people just starting out. That includes young people graduating with engineering degrees.

But apply first online.

What you say is true, but most of those manufacturing jobs in Upstate SC are through hiring halls, not direct hires with the companies. $18 a hour starting is not great, but the slots do have some benefits. Now if you have a STEM degree, you can make a good living.

In 1966 I visited my older cousin at his college in Utah, He was an army brat, and had graduated from HS in Frankfort, while hiis Dad served there.

My cousin old me BMW was the best car in the world. I had barely heard of BMW then. Yet three years hence, drafted and sent to Germany, the BMW dealer was on my walking path from home to the.

I didn’t get my first BMW until 1986, but we are now on our 4th. I really like driving them, but I prefer Audi quattro.

I have owned many cars. My first was a Volvo 240... Then the Triumph, so many Mercedes (the two240ds the 300td, the 420SEL...) The Jaguar XJ6 cars, 85 and 96. The Cadillac. Miata. The Lincoln, which I still adore, though I do not "really" prefer it to the De Ville... The '69 Mercury convertible... SO many cars. But when people ask me what car I really, really loved most, it was the BMW M3 convertible E36. NOTHING was like that car. It was astonishing.
