There's a new 'Gender X' option on N.J. birth certificates. How's it going to work? Your questions

New Jersey made history this month by becoming the fourth state in the nation to create an alternative option on its birth certificates beyond male and female.

Starting Feb. 1, there is a new category on birth certificates -- "undesignated/ non-binary" -- also known as Gender X.

The change is part of the newly-enacted "Babs Siperstein Law," which streamlines the process for transgender residents to change the gender on their New Jersey birth certificates. Unlike in the past, people do not need to have gender-reassignment surgery to amend the document.

Now, anyone can switch the gender on their birth certificate to either male or female or select the new "undesignated" category. Parents can also apply to change the gender designation for their children.

How is it going to work? Here are some of your questions answered. Why is New Jersey doing this now?

Transgender activists have pushed for years to make it easier for people to make changes on their birth certificates to reflect how residents are living their lives.

Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the proposed law twice. But Gov. Phil Murphy signed it in July, saying the new rules are an important move toward equality for all New Jerseyans.

"Allowing vital records to match gender identity is an important step forward that will allow transgender individuals to control the disclosure of their transgender status," Murphy said at the time.

The old law -- which required people to turn over medical records to prove they had surgery to change their birth certificates -- was outdated and unfair, advocates said.

What is Gender X?

On New Jersey birth certificates, a new "undesignated/ non-binary" option is designed for people who don't identify themselves as either male or female.

Problem is that babies don't identify themselves as anything, so this statement is a lie. It's the crazy parents who are identifying them as neither male nor female. The poor babies are the ones who have to live with these abusive parents who use their babies as props for their virtue signaling.

The smart thing to do is select whatever goofiness that comes down the pike. If they allow you to choose Gender X at work, choose it. If you are a male, select female. They are NOT allowed to question you about it.

I thought we needed more women in STEM positions so, unlike Tareyton, I switched

I can’t imagine asking my kid as he moves through the years, “well, have you decided whether you’re male or female?”.

Why allow parents to dictate what the kid’s name is? Shouldn’t he/she/it be allowed to decide their name at 18?

This Gender X designation may get you a lower auto insurance cost. My suspicion is it will enable cheating in other ways.
