Arcadia, Calif. -- Santa Anita has canceled racing indefinitely to re-examine its dirt surface after the deaths of 21 horses in the last two-and-a-half months.

Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita, told The Associated Press Tuesday that racing won't be held this weekend, when two major races were scheduled: the San Felipe for 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls and the Santa Anita Handicap for older horses.

Ritvo wouldn't speculate on when training and racing would resume. After this weekend, races were to be run again starting March 14 at the storied racetrack slated to host the Breeders' Cup world championships for a record 10th time this fall.

Santa Anita received 11-1/2 inches of rain and had unusually cold temperatures in February, but it's unclear whether track conditions played a role in any of the fatalities.

Bad conditions. Apparently, global warming is a real beotch.

One of America's best racetracks.

BTW, the Marx Brothers movie A Day at the Races was filmed there.

Experts have been looking at the racing surface for irregularities. A test last week found no issues.

Hopefully this won’t start talk of bringing polytrack back.

A very Sherlockian mystery. Did all the horses die from stumbles on the muddy track? And, if so, at the same place? In any case, I’d suggest that the track owners have the soil for the entire course examined to a depth of six inches (or however deep a horse’s hoof could go on a muddy track) and see if anything unusual turns up.

Maybe they’re striking a substrate that is the foundation for the covering dirt. Maybe erosion from the rains and years of use have eroded the course’s soil and it needs to be replaced?

It’s hard to comment without knowing what is the average rate of “death” during a season.

I put “death” in quotes because I’m assuming they mean put down.

The article says that track had it’s soil peeled and replaced to a depth of 5”. Radar revealed nothing unusual in the silt, sand, and clay on the course. The track had a layer of red-brown sand from a beach El Segundo applied in 2014 and that it was reported to have been screened for foreign objects and rocks. A track superintendent for the course that had retired a few years earlier is being called upon as a consultant to help investigate.

Two Kentucky Derby prep races are supposed to be happening there soon — the San Felipe this Saturday and the Santa Anita Derby on April 6 (the same day as the Blue Grass at Keeneland and the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. I’ve been to all three of those parks.)

Ten last year, eight the year before, and 14 the year before that , all in the first 2 months of the season.

Yes, the horses are put down, but they are just as dead.

In 2017, 20 deaths occurred among a total of 8,463 starts over a span of 122 racing days at Santa Anita, according to the most recent figures compiled by the Jockey Club.

The Stronach Group also owns Pimlico (the site of the Preakness) and Laurel Park.

One of them was a Canadian MP.

And to add, TODAY IS RAINING HARD in L.A. and will continue tomorrow..I think I went back to Vancouver with all this rain.

" Did all the horses die from stumbles on the muddy track?”

This is just a guess but i'd say the track has a layer of mud on top of hard pan. The horses when running, are sliding through the mud, then striking the compacted dirt and slipping just enough to throw the running horse off it's stride and it tumbles. Resulting in a break.

The track needs a good deep plow to break and churn the hard pan and mud together. Then, lightly compact the mixed soil and do whatever horse tracks do for race day.

Add sand, more top soil etc.

Why the managers of the track haven't done this may be because they never experience the long drought followed by a hard rain that didn't soak the soil thoroughly. A tragic effect of "Global Warming", no doubt.

“Attention all. Can we get a veterinarian and a shotgun?”

The rest of the horses are said to be in stable condition.
