In a U.S. patent, it has been claimed that oleuropein has potent antiviral activities against herpes mononucleosis, hepatitis virus, rotavirus, bovine rhinovirus, canine parvovirus, and feline leukemia virus [69]. Studies have also shown that oleuropein exhibits a significant antiviral activity against respiratory syncytial virus and para-influenza type 3 virus [70].
There is also one anecdotal report that olive leaf extracts augment the activity of the HIV-RT inhibitor 3TC [71]. The olive leaf extracts were investigated for their antiviral activity against viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), a salmonid rhabdovirus, and against HIV-1 infection and replication [72]. Cell-to-cell transmission of HIV was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner with EC50s of 0.2 μg/ml, and HIV replication was inhibited in an in vitro experiment [73].
One of the suspected targets for olive leaf extract (mainly oleuropein) action is HIV-1 gp41 (surface glycoprotein subunit), which is responsible for HIV entry into normal cells. In order to establish HIV protein targets of olive leaf extract and its inhibitory action at the molecular level, Lee-Huang et al. [74] reported a joint theoretical and experimental effort has been carried out to help achieve this goal

We shipped my daughter over to her cousins’ house for a sleepover in hopes she would contract chicken pox, which is MUCH easier to endure as a kid than as an adult. No joy. Far as I know, she never caught it.
The natural immunity our species is developing to Chicken Pox and MMR (making them mild, childhood diseases) is so developed that some kids never get one, or more, of the diseases when they are exposed.
Their immunity is complete.
10,000 years ago these diseases took entire generations.
I would not vaccinate my kid against any of the 4.
Before vaccines for any of them, they took an average of 300-500 people per year (1950s and 60s).
The 2016-2017 Flu took 80,000.
I've had this vaccine last fall. A couple of dizzy spells and headache from first shot. Got second shot 2 months later with only minimal discomfort.
Shingles is a horrid illness. I for one wish to avoid it at all costs.
Don't think so, but that ain't the weird part. As I explained in my reply #66, she said:
1. If you never get chickenpox or the vaccine, you will never get shingles.
2. If you never get chickenpox, but get the vaccine, you may get shingles.
3. The same vaccine that may give you shingles in a higher dose later in life may keep you from getting shingles.
I ain't no doctor so I don't know if any of this is right but I find the whole matter convoluted and borderline ridiculous.
Note: This all refers to Zostavax, it happened long before Shingrix was introduced.
I have just started my 39th year in family practice.. My only “take away” regarding shingles is that witch hazel liberally applied to the rash site (if in an appropriate spot) will help the terrible itching that often follows an outbreak.

The old vaccine - Zostavaz - which was given before late 2017 - actually has live, but weakened, virus in it.
So, after a Zostavax shot, some of those weakened viruses probably take up life long residence in your nerve cells, and they have the potential to become shingles later in life.
I presume the long term goal is to wipe out chickenpox everywhere, just like smallpox has been almost completely wiped out. When you wipe out chickenpox, you wipe out shingles, too.

Ha! That’s where I learned this. The marriage counselor for my first marriage told me both. She said that my wife had become part of a program at our church for helping “battered wives” and the result is that she honestly saw me as an abusive husband.
I tried to work with her and read a bunch of books, went to classes, etc. But eventually I said to her that they had so diluted the concept of “abuse” that the only man to ever live that was not “abusive” was hung on a cross. I also had it out with my abusive men’s group leader over this (he was a volunteer as well).
The core program that did us in was called “Learning to live, learning to love”. They were accusing me of repressing memories of my childhood when, once I interviewed my parents, I found out I had not repressed any memories. The problem was that the program was pure attack on the husband and, for all I know, was a good program if there was serious physical abuse present. But since, at the end of the day, the “real” abuse in that relationship was coming from the, I learned.
But yeah, your comment touched a nerve. After that whole fiasco was over I warned the pastor that if they leave that program in the church, someone is liable to sue them eventually.

My “10” is diverticulitis, hospitalized me for 5 days. I have experienced natural childbirth twice, shingles on head and face twice, and spent a weekend passing kidney stone fragments after lithrotripsy, diverticulitis pain was by far the worst.

No. The chickenpox vaccine is a live virus vaccine.
Having been exposed to someone with shingles may have triggered your immune system to fight the virus. Much like grandparents caring for grandkids with chickenpox protected them from shingles back before kids were vaccinated against chickenpox.

Your poor father, it is horribly painful and can be dangerous, if your intestines rupture. Ninety seven is a grand old age, you were blessed. My father died at age 52, way too young.
This is just a big ridiculous ploy to push the vaccine which is awful in itself.
