This 1,700-year-old transparent blue glass bowl, a little more than eight inches in diameter, was found buried next to the woman at the center of the cemetery. Its Greek inscription reads: "Drink to live forever, for many years!" [Photograph by Arne Hodalic and Katja Bidovec]

“. The grapevine decorations have their role in the Christian Eucharist and Communion, but have their origins in motifs associated with Dionysus, the pagan god of wine and ecstasy.”
Sounds like they can’t decide, and chose the least Christian explanation.

It seems that possibly within a decade of her burial, her square chapel was demolished and a larger (30-by-40-foot) structure was built to enclose her tomb...
Maybe she needed a bigger place.
Incredible, beautiful image by the way.

Christianity before the Mussulman conquests (during the 620-720 AD period) were far different than the Christianity that emerged during the Middle Ages and came to be the current Christian beliefs and practices. The reason they changed? The Mussulman conquests destroyed Christian artifacts and killed as many Christians as they could. Surviving Christians engaged in the the newly imported Mussulman practice of chattel slavery - this was the biggest and most lucrative business at the time.

I had a time just fishing out the graphic URL, but felt we had to have it. That's the one thing I use Internet Explorer for - their "reveal source" option (on the version I have installed) makes that easier than with my other browsers.

“Chattel soavery”...
A practise of long term. As opposed to “race slavery” which has no basis in history yet dominates US discussion of slavery.
The Ottoman Empire imported slaves from the “harvest of the steppes” to deepest Africa. And their economy was dependen on that.

Browsers have that, but the websites have been getting tricky and/or a little too cute with their ways of hiding the graphical URLs.

Remarkable, not least because it's glass -- but it is just plain beautiful. :^)

Browsers have that, but the websites have been getting tricky and/or a little too cute with their ways of hiding the graphical URLsUsing an LG Stylo 3 allows me to do a selective screen capture, post to imgur and a minute or two later post aa link here...neat, allows for zooming in and cropping as my post of the bowl shows. ;>)
