Neanderthals walked upright just like the humans of today
EurekAlert! ^ | Monday, February 25, 2019 | University of Zurich

Neanderthals are often depicted as having straight spines and poor posture. However, these prehistoric humans were more similar to us than many assume. University of Zurich researchers have shown that Neanderthals walked upright just like modern humans - thanks to a virtual reconstruction of the pelvis and spine of a very well-preserved Neanderthal skeleton found in France...

Since the 1950s, scientists have known that the image of the Neanderthal as a hunched over caveman is not an accurate one. Their similarities to ourselves - both in evolutionary and behavioral terms - have also long been known, but in recent years the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. "Focusing on the differences is back in fashion," says Martin Haeusler, UZH specialist in evolutionary medicine...

However, a virtual reconstruction of the skeleton from La Chapelle-aux-Saints has now delivered evidence to the contrary. This computer-generated anatomical model was created by the research group led by Martin Haeusler from the University of Zurich and included Erik Trinkaus from Washington University in St. Louis. The researchers were able to show that both the individual in question as well as Neanderthals in general had a curved lumbar region and neck - just like the humans of today."

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve

in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Able? Abel. Cain was a cannibal, ate Abel, retorted "am I my brother's keeper? (burp!), got branded, then went off and shacked up with some unexplained woman from the Land of Nod. That's where humanity picked up sleep apnea.

Whenever I chat up Neanderthal chicks,
my Cro-Magnon gonads keep stalling.
It’s not a bad lick how her brow is too thick,
but that New Jersey accent’s appalling.

Neanderthals were superior to modern humans in strength. They were vastly superior. They would make Arnold Schwarzenegger seem like a wimp. The only logical reason for their demise is they were probably inferior in intellect. With superior intellect the weaker modern humans were probably more adept in warfare though weaker in physical strength.

It should also be noted that Neanderthals and modern humans did interbred. We all most fortunately, carry their genes. Neanderthals were human. I think their demise was due to competing with other humans of inferior strength but superior intellect. As Mr. Spock would say, “this is a rare logical thought from you humans.”

The pure Neanderthals were not killed out. They were bred out by assimilation with modern humans. A Neanderthal woman would most logically choose to be the wife (if they had wives then, it was probably mate) of the superior human species. It is all about survival of herself and children. This is just basic human instinct.

They were not necessarily less intelligent. It could be that modern humans, though weaker, could run faster and further. Look at, and compare, the physiques of track athletes versus power lifters. If speed was also combined with a more accurate throwing ability, a group of modern humans could creep up on a Neanderthal village, hurl a bunch of spears, kill some Neanderthals from a distance, then run away. Repeat every few days, and the Neanderthals would move out of the territory.
