He Went from Kneeling during the National Anthem to Living with His Agent

BRUCE MAXWELL JUST WANTS A FRESH START

After the former A's catcher became the first and only MLB player to kneel during the anthem, his personal and professional life crumbled. Here's what happened and how he hopes to get back to the big leagues.

On a cloudy Sunday afternoon in early February while pitchers and catchers throughout the land report to big league camps, Bruce Maxwell is on a high school baseball field in the spring chill, being shadowed by a spirited schoolboy named James. The afternoon is full of smiles, and it is difficult to tell which of them is helping the other more. Probably, it's about equal.

James is there with the high school's Best Buddies program, an international organization founded in 1989 for the purpose of helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"He's amazing," Maxwell says. "He's got a lot of energy. I love doing stuff like this. It's good for them, and it's good for us."

That is a crying shame, really breaks my heart...Hope you got a degree while you were still in school, or you're going to be another burger flipper until the machines take that jog away too.

I don’t know anything about him, but would bet that he was a marginal player, and that’s why he’s not in a big league spring training camp. Not because of him kneeling.

If he spit on the flag (by kneeling during the anthem)then he should be banned from baseball forever.

I have no sympathy for this anti-American butt wipe at all

His life is not as difficult as those of the families of soldiers who died fighting under that flag. Why should I feel sorry for him?

Bottom Line: If you intend to do something STOOOOPID like this you had better have gone to at least two All-Star Games and have batted over .300 for the past couple of seasons. They have no use for journeyman back-up catchers who are going to cause PR problems.

Unlike the NFL, MLB does not put up with this nonsense.
Maybe he can play in Canada.

He picked a dumb time in his career to do this. He was still going back and forth to AAA and hadn't caught on at the major league level.

But I think it was the criminal charges stemming from pulling a gun on a female food delivery driver that is causing teams to take a pass.

Baseball fans won’t put up with flag haters.

Did you read the part of the article that explains that he initially refused to get on his knees for the cops?

Ironic to say the least.

There are too many journeyman “AAAA” catchers around.....Erik Kratz, Kevan Smith, Jacob Stallings....
who have NOT done anything to upset your fans or cause
public relations damage. Really dumb of this guy.

He was another hoaxer too. He claimed the waiter was “racist” to him because of his kneeling even the waiter had never heard of him before.

He’s a LH-hitting defensive catcher with marginal hitting and not great at throwing out base runners. The demand for catchers in Spring Training is such that he would have at least an invite. There’s no doubt teams don’t want his kind of trouble; anger issues combined with pissing off fans.

Have to be a star, or at least an everyday player, to overcome those issues.

All I knew is if I were a Major League pitcher and I am pitching against a kneeler, they are going to hear some serious chin music.

Not out because he knelt... out because he got stinking drunk and pulled a gun on a food delivery girl and then got snotty with the cops. The kneeling was a contributing factor, but the alcohol abuse which led to a weapons violation was the root cause.

Sorry, Bruce but when you’re batting .182 last season, you could drape yourself in the flag and salute it but you better be looking for a day job because no one’s gonna hire you to play at night. Sucks to be you, kneeling dude.

I submit that BOTH resulted in them being goners.

Kapernick was certainly good enough as a back up in a league sorely needing good back ups.

But you’re not good enough to start AND you did something DISASTROUS and toxic to any team that hires you?

You’re out.

Tom Brady could kneel, lay down or smoke a cigarette during the Anthem and after all the outcries, he would have six teams vying for him if the Pats let him go..

It’s all relative.

From the article:

“I apologized to her, told her to hold on. I went and put [the gun] away. I came back and told her I’m sorry; I’m going through some things right now and I didn’t know who was at my door. She was like, no, it’s fine. “

From another article reporting on police records:

The woman identified herself as a delivery driver, and Maxwell lowered the gun, keeping it near the door and against the wall, documents state. Fearing for her safety, she dropped the food off at his doorstep, and called police after returning to her vehicle, police records said.

So if had already put the gun away and apologized and she was “like no it’s fine” why didn’t she just hand him the food? Why drop the food on his doorstep and run?

IN my experience, when a delivery person drops your food on your doorstep and runs away to their car and dials 911, no, they are not “like” “it’s fine”.

Playing the ‘raciss’ card is a last-ditch move. Hope he enjoys his new career tending bar.

Well said. Even the minors won’t touch a guy like this. He’s damaged goods, if not toxic.
