Originally Sacha Baron Cohen was going to play Freddie, but he wanted to portray more the “real” Freddie, but the band members vetoed it.
That's his version.
The band's version is that he would be too much Sacha Baron Cohen and people wouldn't believe he was Freddy Mercury.
I'm not sure whether his version would be more "real" or just more salacious, but consider how hard it would be for Sacha to admit that he's not that great an actor.
