Davis remained an active member of the Communist Party until 1991, when she was expelled for opposing the coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
She then formed the “Committees of Correspondence” to carry on the Communist mission with other Party members, including Bettina Aptheker, Conn Hallinan (Provost at UC Santa Cruz), and Harry Targ.
The “History of Consciousness” Program in which Davis teaches awarded a Ph.D. to former Black Panther Huey Newton, while Davis was on the faculty. Jussie’s paternal grandmother is named Molly Hirschenson. Jussie’s great-grandfather was the son of Jeremiah Hirschenson and Sarah Heller. Jussie’s great-grandmother was the daughter of Louis Horowitz and Anna Lupin.

There’s not much out there on Joel, though Joel seems to come from a long line of radicals.
