From A Quiet Place to A Star is Born, studios backed more films with female leads in 2018, according to new research. Out of the top 100-grossing movies, 40 films had women in central roles as either the main character or the co-lead, according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. That represented an increase of eight films from the previous year and 20 movies from 2007. It is the highest percentage of female-driven films in 12 years.
Hollywood has been under public pressure in recent years to tell more stories that feature women and people of color. Some of that advocacy appears to be producing results; recent hits such as Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians scored with audiences in part because they were inclusive.
Actresses from underrepresented groups still dont get the same opportunities as white actors, but data suggests that things are improving. Twenty eight of the top 100 movies of 2018 featured an underrepresented lead or co-lead, according to the report. Thats a net gain of seven films from 2017 and a 15 film gain from 2007. Last year, black or African-American actresses had five lead or co-lead roles, three mixed race actresses had lead or co-lead roles, two Hispanic or Latina actresses had lead or co-lead roles, and one Asian or Asian-American actress had a lead role. There were ethnic groups that were virtually ignored. No Native women and women from the Middle East had leading roles.

Number Of Crappy Films Hits Record Levels In 2018
No wonder numbers going to the theater are down.
“Hollywood is obsessed with gender and race.”
So are all the Dems, leftists, Marxists etc...
They act as if all the former female stars didn’t exist.
“Liberals are obsessed with gender and race. “
Black Panther was only diverse if you believe that a movie with 99% black actors/actresses is “diverse”.
Close (2019) it’s a wonder it didn’t go direct to DVD ,LOL
Huh ... I haven’t been in a movie theatre since 2014.
And we will still hear endless whining that there are not enough movie roles for women and blah blah blah.
Didn’t. Watch. Any.
What were the combined budgets and box office for the 40 films?
Those might be interesting numbers.
No it hasn't. Hollywood has been under pressure from fringe groups to promote their perversions of reality. Public pressure has been to make good movies, which Hollywood has ignored.
Voting on Hollywood's idiocy has taken place at the box office. Results are in. Hollywood has woke, and it's going broke.
Thus is because it has become well-known in Hollywood and other places of socialist propaganda that females, when placed in a existential position, can easily overcome the most hardened and well-trained male adversaries in a matter of a few minutes.
Aww poor oppressed Brie.
Yeah, well, how many movies were made that had a transgendered lesbian woman of color in a position of authority? Clearly, Hollywood has a long way to go.
You beat me to it. Mostly they’re “films”, not movies. Having said that, I liked “Peppermint”, which was savaged by the critics.
Yeah, it's like women have NEVER starred or co-starred in movies...
This is why I switched to anime and am even learning Japanese so I can understand it without the subtitles - zero PC content and much higher quality production all around. I am proud to say I have not even heard of the existence of well over 90% of the top western films in recent years.
And yet not a single petulant remake for women-worship (Ocean’s 8, Ghostbusters, What Women Want, etc... the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is upcoming, by the way) has been even close to the success of the original.
