Thousands of vehicles were stuck in long queues caused by heavy snow on Italy’s A22 motorway on Saturday, and firefighters rescued 200 people who had been trapped for hours in cars and buses.

Queues on the route connecting northeastern regions to Austria reached 16 km (9.94 miles), said a spokesperson for the firefighters of the autonomous province of Bolzano.

He added it was hard to assess the number of vehicles involved, but they were in the “thousands”. …

In England, a "motorway" is what we in the US call a freeway. In Southern California, "motorway" is a designation given to some dirt roads up in the hills.

When I traveled northbound along that same route on January 1, 1962, it was a two-lane highway. It was clear and dry, but snow was piled up high on either side of it.

The last time I passed through there, in July, 1966, we saw the freeway (called Autobahn in Austria and Autostrada in Italy) being constructed next to the two-lane highway. We wished it could have been completed because it took a couple of hours to get over the border from Austria into Italy due to the traffic.

It’s the “blizzard of ‘78”. Cars were stuck essentially in mid-trip wherever they happened to be, including the Route 128 belt.
MA illustrious gov, and eventual US illustrious ‘Rat candidate for pres, saw fit to close the State for business for a week, and having the National Guard dig out thousands of cars on 128.

When you hit the tunnels at 125MPH your ears pop.

That was a blizzard combined with a hurricane. Wind speed hit 110 mph in some places.

An electric car with 25% left of energy will last maybe 12 hours in those conditions. A diesel car with 50% left of fuel, closer to 12 days. Gasoline car with 50% fuel, maybe 2 or 3 days (no sensible person would travel with less than half a tank of fuel in those conditions - electric cars have little choice on long trips).

So, they better learn to respond REALLY FAST if they’re going to force everyone into electric cars, or they’ll be digging out frozen bodies.
