I’m in Iowa.
Snowblower is ready, and I have 20 gallons of milk (for 2 people) and to be safe I just bought a Holstein!

In 1899 an Artic Outbreak (Blue Norther) froze Galveston Bay, killing fishermen and fish.

...THE COLDEST NIGHT IN TEXAS...

FEBRUARY 1899 WAS A VERY COLD MONTH...THANKS MOSTLY TO A BITTERLY COLD OUTBREAK FROM THE 11TH THROUGH THE 13TH. IN FACT...NOTHING IN THE HISTORY OF TEXAS QUITE COMPARES TO FEBRUARY 12TH 1899.

SOME OF THE COLDEST WEATHER THAT EVER HIT TEXAS OCCURRED ON FEBRUARY 12TH OF THAT YEAR. THE LOWEST TEMPERATE EVER RECORDED IN THE STATE OCCURRED AT TULIA IN SWISHER COUNTY IN THE EXTREME SOUTHERN PANHANDLE. THE THERMOMETER DROPPED TO 23 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. HOWEVER...THERE WERE UNOFFICIAL REPORTS THAT WERE EVEN COLDER...30 DEGREES BELOW ZERO...THAT NIGHT AT TWO OTHER LOCATIONS (WOLF CREEK AND AT A SITE SOUTHEAST OF PERRYTON...BOTH IN OCHILTREE COUNTY IN THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE).

THIS COLD AIR SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THERE WERE EVEN REPORTS OF A THIN LAYER OF ICE COATING MOST OF GALVESTON BAY.

THE ALL TIME RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE THAT WAS ESTABLISHED AT TULIA WAS TIED YEARS LATER WHEN SEMINOLE...IN GAINES COUNTY OF WEST TEXAS...REPORTED A TEMPERATURE OF 23 DEGREES BELOW ZERO ON FEBRUARY 8 1933.

MANY TEXAS CITIES ESTABLISHED ALL-TIME RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES IN FEBRUARY 1899. BELOW IS A LIST OF THE RECORD LOWS AT VARIOUS CITIES ACROSS THE STATE.

ABILENE 9 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1947
AMARILLO 16 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1899
AUSTIN 2 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1949
BEAUMONT/PT. ART. 11 DEGREES SET IN 1930
BROWNSVILLE 12 DEGREES SET IN 1899
CORPUS CHRISTI 11 DEGREES SET IN 1899
DALLAS/FT. WORTH 8 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1899
DEL RIO 10 DEGREES SET IN 1989
EL PASO 8 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1962
GALVESTON 8 DEGREES SET IN 1899
HOUSTON 5 DEGREES SET IN 1930 AND 1940
LUBBOCK 17 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1933
MIDLAND/ODESSA 11 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1985
SAN ANGELO 4 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1989
SAN ANTONIO 0 DEGREES SET IN 1949
WACO 5 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1949 AND 1899
WICHITA FALLS 12 BELOW ZERO SET IN 1947

“The brutal cold and snow storms of 1977 was considered proof we were entering a new ICE AGE!”

I was 16 that winter. We had an ice storm to beat them all - lost a few trees in the yard and we were without power for a week. I remember Mom emptying meat from the freezer that was going to go bad and Dad firing up the charcoal grill and we had a neighborhood party.

The ice was so bad that you didn’t walk anywhere; you crawled on hands and knees, or scooted on your butt!

However, I was a 16 year old girl without a PHONE for an ENTIRE WEEK, so THAT is what I remember most, LOL! :)

That music would be a perfect background for a snowy evening! I’m going to check what’s currently in store for us in southern ‘Sconny; they’ve changed their predictions a few times since the beginning of the week.

Stay safe, Pete! :)

(Blue Norther)

From “Texas gags”.

When a blue norther hits it freezes the bonfires
and the Texans grind them up to make chili powder.

I hit the Piggly Wiggly on Wednesday. We only have 2.5 gallons of milk and I laid in 12 rolls of Scott's TP. I can always bake bread if we need it. ;)

BTW - The Jew Hating Women’s march is Saturday in DC

Oh Goodie, I hope Linda Sarsour ends up looking like Jack Nicholson at the end of The Shining.

diggin it, thanks bro....

My mother and grandmother used to talk about Blue Northers when I was a kid, I thought the sky would turn blue....

Kinda like when I became a USN meteorologist, trying to time when the cold front passage (FROPA) would occur....send the nugget outside to look for the “blue line” to fly by.

Good for you! I have been thinking about a Natural Gas log or insert, but just spent about $4500 to remove a tree and upgrade my electrical service. Maybe before next years power outage!

They say it got so hot one time in Texas that a farmer
with a mule team was hauling a load of corn in from the
field when it started to pop. ONe of the mules thought
it was a blue norther and snow, and froze to death.

Moooo!

Beau left at 4am to plow snow this morning - we got about 6” of light, fluffy snow, so that makes everything go faster. I’m heading out to shovel our SEVEN stair landings (I shoveled once at 10pm; we got another 2” after that) and sweep off the porch and fill bird feeders. I’ve got to clean dog kennels and rotate the six of them through the exercise yard; it has to be today because we’re going into the sub-zero temps by tomorrow. :(

Hoping skies stay clear for the Super Blood Moon/Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse tomorrow night into Monday. It starts at 10:30 pm.

Sunshine-y day today, which is always motivating all the way around! :)

My, what a Wonderful winter storm picture!

(If you get 6 or 7 dozen eggs you could invite the neighborhood over for a french toast breakfast!

Unfortunately plums are out of season it being the middle of winter! Else you could use this!

How high does the snow get! Its not like its Houghton and you need a 2nd story landing for your main entrance!

“Harper” refused to harp and we had about 1 inch of snow on top of 1/2 inch of ice. The Meteorologists can be wrong like this all the time as far as I am concerned. Leave the bragging rights to Houghton and Copper Harbor.
