Amazon reportedly wants to launch a streaming service for video games next year

... the Internet retail giant is joining the growing list of companies that want to build what’s essentially a Netflix for video games. Microsoft and Google are likewise interested in this, and what Amazon also wants to develop is a version of what Sony also has via PlayStation Now — a way to stream games instead of customers having to fork over the money to buy and download them.

Talks have already begun between Amazon and game publishers for this streaming outlet that, at the earliest, would be live sometime next year. And it should go without saying, services like this coming to fruition would represent a huge transformation of the business model supporting the video game industry, as the new report notes. “Streaming services represent a potentially significant shift in the games business by, in some cases, eliminating the need for players to purchase expensive hardware, such as consoles or PCs, to run the most elaborate titles,” according to The Information. “Instead, the games run on powerful computers inside data centers, allowing people to play them on devices with less processing muscle, including smartphones, tablets and smart televisions.”

I still should get one of those C64 mini computer game rigs.

Those are about the only games I’m probably any good at. After a day of supporting the technology challenged, doing much with a box after hours doesn’t interest me much.

I used to love Archon on C64 back in the day, and Archon II Adept.

I could never get any of those Commodore tape drive games to work.

What cartridge based ones I had were fun.

Way to humble brag.
All we could afford when I was a kid was the Commodore Vic 20.

I dunno if Archon was on tape, i think it was a floppy if I recall correctly, which I probably do not.

I had three or so tape games, they were all text adventures similar to Zork.

Everyone one of those tape games corrupted on me within a week of use or so.

We had the VIC 20 and the C64 later.

My grandfather was always trying new things with his VIC 20.

Funniest line I ever heard at a technical talk, this about 5-6 years ago:

“I used to be an Application Service Provider, then I did Software as a Service, and now I’m doing Cloud Computing.”

The room cracked up.

Cable/CATV will be gone in 3-4yrs, and Streaming will be the commercial future, for a number of years.

So many fond memories. I was in the Air Fore from 82 to 86 in computer repair when the C64 came out. I had a vic 20 at first but sold it to one of my buddies. Had the c64 for a while and for us young guys in the shop it was great. We all got subsidized for housing/food etc so we had disposable income to buy computers. we would have big game parties...everyone would bring their rigs to someone's house and play. I must have days on that thing learning to program in basic and playing games etc. It really was the launching point for my whole IT career. I think i sold the c64 to another buddy and got an Atari ST (maybe?).

One of my first jobs out of the Air force I ended up getting to buy an Compaq portable computer when the company was done with it. Kind of like the size of a small suitcase with tiny monitor built right in. Learned dos real well on that and wrote several apps in Turbo Pascal.

Great times!

Maybe maybe not. GameStop makes thier money on used games and Consoles. The used game market is big and it’s nice to get a little money back for a game you will never play again. As for myself l always wait 6 months or so and save about 50% by buying a used copy of a big title.
