An officer responding to the incident, later identified as 22-year-old Natalie Corona, was hospitalized in “very serious condition” a short time later, Doroshov said.

Corona, who had suffered a gunshot wound in the incident, was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Police Chief Darren Pytel said.
A manhunt for the gunman ensued immediately after the shooting, Doroshov said.

I remember the push to get women on the police patrol force as it was figured that criminals would be less likely to shoot them.
Within a few weeks, the first woman patrol officer was shot dead.

I came across a tombstone in Calvary cemetery in Queens NY that identifies the woman buried there as the first woman to die in the line of duty NYPD. I think she was killed in the 80s.
In fairness there were many who believed it albeit I think they were referring to physically being assaulted. Times really do change as we are far less a chivalrous society now then at that time. However, one thing that most street cops would have told her then was that when faced with an arrest, regardless of sex, the perp would most likely take on someone they were reasonably sure they “could take” in a physical confrontation. That has not changed. It extends not just to women coppers but to those who previously would have been not employable as police due to their lack of physical size.

Probably 50/50 that killer was illegal. Illegal would have headed south to cross the border into Mexico and just disappeared. Drunk cowboy by personal choice.
