Not sure on their excerpt policy- so I'll just post the link here, and point out that in their report, they make no mention of the fact that this pitcher donated this property to a Christian camp, Camp Barnabas, and don't mention the fact that this camp puts Christ first, and always "points people to Christ in everything we do". This is an old story from 2017, but thought it was pretty cool.
Who pays the property taxes and other taxes, who pays for the insurance, who pays for the continued maintenance and security, fire and liability etc.? Maybe Hamels has provided for those necessities....if he has, his is truly a charitable gift.
My guess is that he took a hefty tax deduction and whoever he donated to now has all the expenses of the property.
I’ve seen the property in question. It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere but it’s VERY nice. I suspect Camp Barnabas will or did resell it.
perhaps he did get a tax deduction, however, i doubt the deduction was anywhere near the $9.4 million he could have got if he sold the place outright for himself
This is more than a year ago. The 10-acre property is on Table Rock Lake.
Presumably, a religious camp would be tax exempt. Camp Barnabas already exists with infrastructure for maintenance and security.
Cole Hamels and his wife do a lot of charitable work in this area. They are good Christians and don’t seem to do good works in order to dodge taxes. But I’m sure that if YOU had a hefty tax deduction or write off coming to you you’d never dream of taking it.

I sat across the aisle from him on a flight from DFW to Philadelphia. He seemed like a gentleman from what I saw.
