Tom Brady bet on himself this season and lost big.
As part of a series of team-friendly deals the three-time MVP has taken from the Patriots, Brady had $5 million in performance bonuses built into his contract for 2018, and he will receive exactly none of that money.
Brady was in line to receive $1 million for finishing in the top five in the league in each of passer rating, completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown passes and passing yards, according to contract data from Spotrac.com. He failed to accomplish any of those.

Poor guy.
He didn’t “lose” 5 million. He simply didn’t earn it.
Pathetic.
More sports contracts should be set up like this.
Instead of attacking Brady,
Let’s look at his contract as a way that the team could work around Tom, to try and afford other players.
I don’t think he’s crying over the money not awarded to him.
He still made $15 mill.
He knows his career is winding down.
He’s had an incredibly long run.
18 years.
He’s got many accomplishments to be proud of.
I think they both need to see other men
I’m surprised that all those top athletes don’t have performance clauses in their contracts.
That looks expensive!
New York media trashing Boston sports. Same old, same old.
Brady has long agreed to be underpaid so management can get better players. A down year means more money for some other players. That’s why he’s got 8 Superbowl appearances.
The media despises Brady almost as much as they despise Trump.
The NFL cracked down on some of that back in the 1990s when the 49ers got some very talented players for low salaries and huge bonuses that were very easily achieved. Rickey Jackson was a top free agent linebacker who had been paid more than $1.3 million in his last year with the Saints. He signed with the 49ers the following year for the league minimum (less than $200,000) plus an $800,000 bonus if the team made the playoffs (which they were going to do unless the team plane crashed).
They also made arrangements with corporate sponsors to get the sponsor to sign big endorsement deals with their players to make up the difference between what they were paid by the team and what they could have gotten elsewhere in the NFL.
I had heard Brady has been paid “off the books” in a very creative way to allow the Patriots to keep him, and pay the large amounts he deserves (deserved?) while still allowing cap room for other key players. Any Patriots fans out there who can enlighten?
Others in the AFC East are praying for the day he leaves.
He didnt lose 5 million. He simply didnt earn it.
Line of the year!!!
Well, yeah. All the Denver news can talk about is the Broncos head coach got fired. That’s what’s important.
His rationale was that he never wanted players to think about what was best for them individually, but what was best for the whole team.
Yep. It is estimated Brady’s 2016 income was $45 million or so. NFL salary was less than half that.
Brady has restructured his contract at least twice to allow room for other free agents players and keep the Pats under the salary cap. Brady is underpaid in relation to many other NFL QB’s. This season was not Tom’s best. Overall he was middle of the road. He is still the GOAT. That is what the New York papers hate. He will enter the NFL Hall of Fame on first ballot. The Pats have dominated the NFL ever since Brady started playing.
As far as other AFC teams go. Who has the most wins at New Era Field home of the Buffalo Bills? Answer: Tom Brady
FYI, I grew up as a Bills fan and remained a Bills fan until they benched Doug Flutie. Then I became a Pats fan.
The only place he consistently has had issues is playing in Miami.
My prediction is the Pats will lose the AFC Championship game to KC. KC/NO Superbowl. NO wins
