Maybe someday but if my math is even close those proposed tungsten projectiles would weigh 15-20000 lbs each before you added launch or guidance systems which makes me skeptical that they exist yet considering how much it woudl cost to get them into a usable orbit to begin with.

Russia cannot win an arms race,

They won't have to win the race. They just have to wait for the next Obama to become President. Then they will attack, knowing he (or she) won't respond. They will win without us returning a shot.

That’s not “almost all”.

Admiral Halsey was not happy with those numbers and called them unacceptable. The 4,900+ Navy dead was horrendous.

That's what the Japanese thought too.

The biggest threat to the Navy are chicken littles that harp on the Russian threat. Most of whom have never seen a real warship.

The gun-launched guided projectile (GLGP) is a proposed missile intercept system using the rail-gun (Mach-8) derived projectile with steering. The range and velocity are reduced as fired from powder guns, but an explosive charge compensates for the lowered kinetic energy.

They know it goes that fast because the Russian made speedometer from a Mig says so.

With the limited staffing of ships now there aren’t enough crew to perform damage control.

DC Swamp critters will have to be more careful now - now that they know THEY might also be killed... Shelters for them - but not for the rest of us... Same with ‘elites’ hideaway shelters - there won’t be time to get to them.

There's enough. But the bigger picture is why have a naval fleet at all? Shouldn't we just scuttle the fleet now in a smart preemptive strategic move?

We’re just about at the point that the Russians, and the Chinese, for that matter will be able to strike us and we won’t know what hit us - and we won’t be able to communicate a counterstrike even if we do figure out what happened.

But what the hell, my Senator is a RINO and therefore I’m going to sit out the next election and let the Military-hating Democrat win. Yea, that will TEACH THE REPUBLICANS A LESSON!!!

Right.

Knowing nothing about this other than wha the article says, you are probably correct. Likely to be a pure kinetic weapon, like a “Rods from God” style destroyer. Putting an explosive on the thing would probably slow it down.

Also how would you control something going that fast? I would guess it’s fire and forget. Just my $.02 worth.

Place a cloud of fragments in the path of a Mach 8 object. If you thought a jet hitting a drone could be bad ...

Upon impact, those fragments, and the thousands of other fragments created from the Mach 8 object, would all be raining down on the unsuspecting victims below.

I tend to believe Russia has this weapon, maybe not quite as hyped up as they say. But it is just another stand off...if they deploy it, we deploy a massive nuclear detonation on Russia in that same time frame, nobody wins, we all die.

We have been experimenting with this technology since 1980. It is a technology that is expensive and hard to control. I don’t know where we are, but what we are doing will not be written up in a popular magazine.

Same with kinetic weapons. Testing has shown that they work, but are difficult to work with. (not accurate and can disintegrate in flight if anything gets off center.)

My guess is that defense against them would need to be of the laser type,— also something we have experience with but mostly is classified.

So I am for taking all this with a grain of salt. We should always suspect our competition to be working with new things.

We’re already bankrupt. We need over $20 trillion just to have nothing. So let’s not talk about driving other countries into bankruptcy.

Control is easy, and it flies a profile that is unique where many considerations with conventional nukes or armaments are irrelevant with the PGS system.
