The NFL's highest paid quarterbacks will be watching some of the cheapest in the playoffs
Washington Post ^ | December 17, 2018 | Adam Kilgore

Late last summer, near the conclusion of training camp, a reporter asked Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Pace about his team's window of contention. How cognizant was Pace of not only building for the future with a second-year quarterback, but also attempting to win immediately, before Mitchell Trubisky's bargain rookie deal grew more expensive?

"That is something we internally talk about," Pace replied. "There's no question, the obvious advantages to that, versus going out and signing. In a perfect world, any franchise would want to hit on a young, drafted quarterback, as opposed to maybe hitting on it in free agency, where the financial part is different."

The winning formula is hit the jackpot with a QB on a cheap rookie contract then use the money to go all in acquiring or retaining players. When you pay a QB $25 MM a year 14% of the salary cap hurts ones ability to get talent at other positions.

Or signing the best QB free agent in the history of the NFL (Drew Brees).

Your method has benefit of being repeated (lol).

Have I mentioned how much I despise Aaron Rodgers?

So glad I don’t have to see his face in the playoffs.

And, I have actually warmed up to Baker Mayfield.

GO BROWNS

7 of the top 10 highest paid quarterbacks’ teams are either in the playoffs or are in the hunt and haven’t been disqualified yet.
Roethlisburger, Wilson, Rivers, Luck, Brees, Newton and Flacco.
Flacco’s the only one that’s been benched.

I started losing interest in the NFL once they instituted the salary cap in the 1990s. The appeal of a sport is ruined when you have personnel decisions being made based entirely on an artificial constraint like a salary cap.

I'm still baffled at how a professional sports team can maintain any loyalty among fans when the roster becomes an endless revolving door of players.

Flacco is going to be snapped up by a team needing an experienced quarterback. Probably won’t get the same bucks but will still make very nice money.

NFL = every 30 seconds is a controlled prison yard riot.

Oh, I thought the winning formula was to trade with Oakland so Chucky could continue destroying his roster by pumping up your roster.

DING! DING! DING!

We have a WINNER!

NFL teams may have career players like in the 70’s and 80’s, but most of them will be playing on depleted, loser teams in their twilight years - and that sucks for THEM and the fans.

That was when I started losing interest; add in the flag football rules for the QBs, which seem to be ever increasing, and they really lost me. How can you compare Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisburger and Drew Brees to Tarkenton, Staubach, Bradsaw - all of whom were driven into the ground on almost EVERY DAMN PLAY, and they still got up and continued to perform?!?

Then you add in the penalties, which are now completely arbitrary on the part of the referees, and it really isn’t two powerful teams duking it out, fighting for a championship - it’s which ever team is lucky enough to not get flagged during a crucial drive.

Yep. Alex Smith is also on that top ten list and had the Redskins in the drivers seat until his leg got snapped in two.

Of course all of sports has ALWAYS been a revolving door, most careers are short. NHL has an advantage of being a helmeted league, outside the star players giving lots of interviews most fans have no idea what most of their players look like. It’s an anonymous sport. And in general people root for the name on the front, not the back, every Yankees owner has known that.

Worked for the Eagles last year, that's for sure. But more than that, I think the emerging dynamic now is the revitalization of the running game.

Defenses all are designed to stop the pass. Linebackers are being selected for their coverage ability, in some instances they even substitute a DB for one of the LBs. Safeties are all deep and they spend a ton on corners. All because the trend has been to make the NFL a passing league. But smart teams have made the following conclusions: "defenses expect the pass, they're prepared for the pass, if we get a bell cow running back he's cheap and effective at exploiting those defenses. And tackling a runner without getting a penalty is getting more and more difficult too. Oh yeah, if we do that then we can pass better too."

The Rams have Gurley, anyone going to argue he doesn't make it hard to defend them? Zeke Elliott, Saquon Barkley, these aren't hall of fame talents (probably) BUT they look like they are because defenses are really vulnerable to a power running attack now.

And as RBs rise, QBs will fall.

Then you add in the penalties, which are now completely arbitrary on the part of the referees

Last week in the Eagles V Cowboys game the Cowboys fumbled the opening kickoff. Several Eagles jumped on the ball, there were no cowboys in the vicinity initially and an Eagle came running out of the pile holding the ball. The officials initially ruled it a non-fumble, then when challenged ruled that it was a fumble but they couldn't be sure who recovered so Cowboys keep the ball.

Arbitrary is right.

The stadium where the Ravens played Sunday had as many empty seats as occupied during the game.

Of all the things wrong with NFL the cap is the last to worry about. Its exactly why I don’t watch college football as much. Tired of the rich schools buying the good coaches away from the smaller schools.

The Atlanta Falcons, Super Bowl LI FIRST HALF Champions, signed Matt Ryan aka "Matty [choker] Ice", to a 5 year $150 MILLION contract extension this past off season. It immediately caused problems and after a pitiful year, they will be spectators for The Super Bowl.
