Dana Carvey Remembers George Bush, From Muse to Friend
NY Times ^ | December 7, 2018 | Dana Carvey

Late on Nov. 8, 1988, the phone rang. I answered, and a familiar voice said: “Well, congratulations. You won.” “I won? What do you mean I won?” “Bush won, so you won,” he answered. “Jon?” “YES, it’s me! JON LOVITZ! And NOW YOU are going to be the president on ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the next four years. HAPPY NOW?” On “Saturday Night Live,” your friend’s defeat can be your victory. Comedians can be insanely competitive — the reason “class clown” is singular is because if there were two class clowns, one clown would ultimately kill the other clown.

Wouldn't Be Prudent.

This is a hilarious cold opening during the build up to the First Gulf War:

I was at a convention when Carvey was the opening attraction. During GW Bush administration. He started off with a rather condescending GW joke. When very few laughed...you could see Carvey immediately change the tenor of his jokes about GW..
Entertainers.....do anything for a gig....yet so many of our poulation get their ideas and political views from their self serving chops.
I never use them to shape or justify my opinions anymore. Same with todays vomit producing Colberts...Olivers...Griffins...etc...

When is it we can actually express our views on this NWO guy....When it is time I would say something like “he was a political hack and because of his global outlook he manifested the clinton /bush/sotoreo decades which decimated our republic....I think he was a complete subversive “...but I’ll wait until its appropriate to stae such view. Thank you

Good political satire simply doesnt exist anymore.

I think the last good one I saw was Dave Chappelle’s “Black Bush” segment. A lot of us can still quote parts of that.

Will Farel’s portrayal of George W. went from being funny in 2000 to being retooled to attack rather than entertain. Tina Fey did the same with Sarah Palin.

From 2008, no one made fun of Obama at all. They lie about “well he has nothing to make fun of”. A comedian that says that ought to have been ridiculed as a hack. in 2008 they still couldn’t make fun of Hillary. they still cant.

The Trump guy on SNL (Baldwin?) was obviously just a political attack and not even trying to be funny like Carvey was.

I really did enjoy Dana Carvey’s GHWB. SNL is unwatchable now and has been thus for a couple of decades. Nastiness in not funny.

Thanks for posting that. I've been searching for it for years.

Funny and true. You have to speak in terms your enemy understands.

Trump did it with North Korea.

Will Farrell is barely smarter than the squirrels in my backyard, and barely funnier than Jack Black (the reason for whose success in comedy continues to elude me).

Jon Lovitz did a pretty good Dukakis on SNL. Of course, Dana Carvey had GHWB nailed.

It was a kinder, gentler (and funnier) time on SNL. These days, it is so nasty and mean that it is unwatchable and not funny at all.
