I did a few of these
Have you seen any canes and such made from that Black Diamond Willow?
On process, I like the subject to look hand carved with chip cuts visible, use acrylic paints in a thin wash, built it up till you get the color you want, then lightly sand the high points to simulate handling and age, finally rub I down with boiled linseed oil, that will yellow the tones and make it look older

to do this level of work you damn near need to be a vet, study the damn things, the muscle groups, the habits
No, I have a cedar bough that needs to have spirits on it to be used as a cane in the mountains
Got to finish canes with metal ferrules, stones, spirits

Next time you are at a carvers show, if you see some Canes that appear to have natural hollowed out black diamond shapes in them, ask about them.
The bark is wetted and soaked off or carved off under various techniques and I would think that a bent branch, of no value to the cane makers, would be a wonderful start on an odd fish of some sort.
