Well Sonia. You could be living here in America where we let people smoke the sh*t out of “cannabis” and ban plastic straws. The UK doesn’t own the market on stupidity.

Mentally diseased brain at work.

Realize pushing pot is the most important aspect of the liberal fascist agenda.

"And as I tucked into my first vegan mockburger on the plane home – nicely pink inside, my tastebuds honestly couldn’t distinguish it from the real thing "

Brings back memories of the old smoke filled restaurant days when I couldn't taste the food for the smoking.

“Say, here’s a thought: Why not just leave people free to make their own decisions without the nanny state running their lives? “

Then they couldn’t virtue signal how superior they are.

Give government the power to regulate or ban the use of something you don't like, and you can be pretty sure that someone else at some time will use that governmental power to regulate or ban the use of something you do like.

See that? Now you’re a pusher. Because your train of thought regarding personal freedom runs counter to the prohibitionists who believe that the scourge of drugs justifies a police state to save people from them.

“Cannabis is damaging in that people whose brains are damaged to the point where they are incapable of caring for themselves become a burden on society.”

It’s much worse than that. Otherwise sensible and functional people decide to vote for and support and even worship the like of Bill Clinton, Barrack Obama etc...

Why did the 60’s New Left, today’s Democrat Socialists and others, push pot and hallucinogens so much?

That’s a rhetorical question.

Meat gives life. Pot doesn’t.

How can you have pudding if you don't eat your meat?

Time for the nanny state to get more radical. We should start by banning altogether things that have literally no function, such as bottled water in a country where it’s actually safer to drink tap water. And take a leaf out of wartime Britain – climate change is no less existential a threat – and ration activities such as flying and eating meat.

"Radical" is right. Climate change is that imaginary monster under your bed that would be life-threatening if only it were real. Using it as an excuse for the government to begin dictating what you can eat, drink, smoke, drive, fly, where you can travel, what recreations you can pursue, what you can read or write or say; all that is justified, just don't call us totalitarians. Sodha may claim her tongue is in her cheek here, but I really don't think so.

The government’s no.1 job is to protect the general population. That the are not really doing a good job of that remains to be seen. Trying to make sure we don’t become a nation of deadheads is part of that job.

Is it also part of the government's no. 1 job to make sure we don't become a nation of drunks by re-enacting Prohibition?

If not, why not?

“Political tags — such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth — are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.”

When I ‘scan read’ the headline must have picked up meat first as I took ‘cannabis’ to be cannibal...

Yes. Let’s stop banning things and have credentialed entities help with information and education about pros and cons of things to ingest. Help parents understand the potential harm in what their children ingest, and let adults choose their own stuff.

“Cannabis is damaging in that people whose brains are damaged to the point where they are incapable of caring for themselves become a burden on society. On the other hand, what in the world is the “social harm” of eating the way we evolved to eat? “

What are you talking about? People die extremely early deaths EVERY FEW MINUTES from heart attacks and strokes directly caused by their eating habits. They also frequently become vegetables and need society to literally spoon feed them and turn their overweight bodies. VEGETABLES. Such a thing will not happen at such an age to an otherwise healthy person even if they consume cannabis daily!

If we are supposedly making these laws to save people from themselves and stop being a burden, HOW is ordering mountains of unhealthy food/drink legal?

The active component of Cannabis has not done damage to a single cell in any human body. Smoking does damage but legalization is bringing forth lab-tested smokeless methods that cause zero harm.

The theoretical toxic dose of cannabis determined in petri dishes and lab animals is beyond what any human can ever consume or even afford to buy. NO long term permanent damage has ever been proven even with even daily use. No twin studies have shown any permanent difference even under the highest doses. The studies showing various indirect correlations are exactly like the studies correlating schizophrenics to be 300-400% more likely to be cigarette smokers. It only shows crazy/stupid people are more likely to smoke. The smoking did not cause it.

Nearly anything you pull of the shelf at the pharmacy is more toxic than cannabis. Cough syrup, sleeping pills, allergy pills are all more toxic/addictive/impairing yet 100% legal at any age. Pure Methamphetamine can be still legally given in 50 states to your child if a doctor prescribes it! As well as stronger synthetic versions heroin with doses high enough to kill a horse! Pharma patches that get people stoned for days, poison their body and make them addicted they feel like they’ll die without one! Billions of tax dollars are spend on these poisons while people can be shot for growing a free plant that is better in every way.

PROHIBITION OF THIS PLANT IS NOT ABOUT SAFETY

Methinks the author’s thought process is clouded by cannabis

If he can't tell the difference between beef and his "vegan mockburger", then he's either incredibly stoned or has never had a real burger.

ration activities such as flying and eating meat

Typical leftist. Wants to control every facet of my life. Where I live, what I drive, what I eat, how I raise my children (and if/how many I can have). Of course, these "rations" will not apply to the elite "intellectuals" like he and AlGore.

Excellent post.

We need to keep elevating FREEDOM, including the freedom of lifestyle choice, and keep discouraging social safety nets to remove bad behavior consequences from people’s choices.

It should remain crystal clear that, as fun as it might be at first, jumping out the window is a less safe choice than taking the elevator down from the 50th floor.

I would get sick immediately from her vegan burger. In order to make it taste umami like real meat, they have to put in some kind of msg (under one of the millions of legal pseudonyms for it).

There is a difference.

First of all, eating meat is not bad for you, but even if it is, you are only hurting yourself.

But under the influence of drugs people hurt other people — by driving or even attacking others because of drug induced illusions.
