A Trump bump? Congressional candidate Seth Grossman expects it

In a recent editorial, The Philadelphia Inquirer declined to endorse the Republican Congressional candidate for New Jersey's 2nd District because, among other things, he said that Kwanzaa is a "phony" holiday.

Where did Seth Grossman get that idea?  From me. In one of my columns, I noted that the organizer of Kwanzaa, Maulana Karenga, once said of Kwanzaa, "People think it's African, but it's not."

It certainly makes me feel good to have a candidate citing my writings. But I'm afraid history shows that agreeing with me is usually the kiss of death for a politician. I'm not up for election, so I can say what I want.

The 69-year-old Grossman is that rare politician who keeps saying what he wants - even after he wins his party's nomination and heads into the general election.  The received wisdom among New Jersey Republicans these days is that a a candidate doesn't want to be seen as too close to President Trump in this "blue" state. Grossman didn't get the memo. He's 100 percent behind Trump and he wants everyone to know it.

Typical was a recent debate at Stockton University against his Democratic opponent Jeff Van Drew, an affable, moderate state senator from Cape May County.  Grossman began that debate by saying, "I support President Trump, that's why I'm running. I want to give him a strong majority of Republicans in Congress to punish, not support, sanctuary cities."  He kept that up throughout that debate, adding some of his favorite one-liners such as this nugget on carbon-dioxide emissions: "The climate's been changing for 5 billion years. Go ask Noah!"

He's 100 percent behind Trump and he wants everyone to know it...according to nephew who's tuned into this stuff, the local Republicans supported Van Drew because they were put off by such scary thinking - disgusting - but at that Grossman had a good showing, even winning our Republican town but losing overall to Van Drew by about 4000 votes......
