My Dad wanted to be identified as NA (in his case it would have been Canadian First People), because there might have been some benefits to be associated with the tribe. He was unable to demonstrate this because like you found, people did not usually admit to being part Indian if they could pass.

In my generation I took the DNA test and I am 8 %, so my father would likely have been 16%. Too late for him now, but such was the case at the time. My Grandmother (on my father’s side) did look like a native American and her marriage certificate did have her being married in British Colombia. But no mention of ethnicity.

Only because she met her US mate in Canada. Her tribe is the Nanimo nation which at this time has a reservation on Vancouver Island. In earlier times, the Nanimo indians were as far south as Port Townsand and other parts of Washington State.

My father had mentioned that his mom was first married when she was 16, her husband was 45. She moved to Olympia with him and became a US citizen (probably never really went through any citizenship court). She had several children by this marriage and married again and had my father. (The second marriage was to a man more her age, but there are few records of what happened to him, the family lore is that he left to find a job and planned to send back money, but there is no evidence and the ancestry system does not find him after this either.

One last item about being Native — I was in a bar in Silverdale, WA on a business trip and a person there buttonholed me and asked if I was part Indian. I assumed it was because I have Indian characteristics from that part of the US. (Always seemed to support the story until I had the DNA test.)

I thought about visiting the city of Nanimo, but really have no physical evidence other than my appearance, and you know how far that got Warren.
