Thanks for posting that. One side effect I have with higher doses of Vitamin D is insomnia. Once I start having insomnia I start dialing back my Vitamin D intake for a couple days. Seems to work. Also, I try to take it in the morning as there has been evidence that it intersects with your melatonin production.
That has got to the the most misleading headline and the most poorly constructed study I have run across that did not involve “global warming”.
I have a hyper para-thyroid, and my body produces more calcium than necessary. Strange, because at one time through bone density tests, I was diagnosed with Osteopenia, and was prescribed a prescription med that I had to spray in my nose (rotating nostrils) each day. Once they found the hyper-para-thyroid, they told me to stop using the Calcium med. A few years ago, my Endocrinologist started me on one Vitamin D pill once a week. Vitamin D is also recommended for cardiovascular health. Since he’s the one who diagnosed the para-thyroid problem, he wouldn’t be prescribing me Vitamin D if he didn’t think I needed it. He also treats my Type II diabetes, and he serves as my family doctor after mine of 20 years moved out of state. I was diagnosed with a non-specific connective tissue disorder many years ago. My mother had Lupus, but I don’t have enough symptoms of Lupus to be diagnosed with it. I fall into what they call a grey area, but it’s recognized as a specific diagnosis for medical purposes.
I don’t know about bone health but daily 5000 units of D3 has kept me virus free for 16 years, my wife for 14 years and my three offspring for varying amounts of years depending on when I could induce them to start. D3 has ended manic depressive cycles for three women I know including one daughter. With all three the results were manifest within 2 weeks to a month. Bone health is the least of my concerns ,actually.
Yeah, and it’s a meta analysis - how many of the separate studies were conducted by doctors and scientists getting grants from the BigPharma companies making ultra-expensive osteoporosis drugs with hideous side effects?
Not much money to be made from generic Vit D3 over the counter.
Makes sense.
YES, what YOU said....also Magnesium is a big factor in bone health....writers seem to be soooo stupid these days.
and...PS....CALCIUM alone does NOT help bones
“You can tell you are getting enough when you start having pleasant dreams.”
I didn’t know this!
I live in the Pacific Northwest and the weather has been changing so I decided to get a head start on my winter regular intake of vitamin d.
I noticed this week that my dreams have been rather “floaty and happy” instead of intense and anxious.
Allopaths “discover” that vitamins don’t help. What a surprise.
None of these studies dealt with anyone receiving enough vitamin D3 to make a difference. 50 nmol/L?? Compared to 25?? Its like comparing how hungry a guy is who hasnt eaten since yesterday to a guy who hasnt eaten since the night before that!
And yes. There should be a study (not a meta study which can be performed on any toilet with a laptop in hand) contrasting people who supplement enough D3 and K2 to bring up their blood levels to 70 or more, contrasted with the people who do not supplement at all and have low blood levels of D.
Dont be. I take over 5000 IU a day and never felt any of those supposed side effects. Just get a blood test and keep your levels under 90 unless you have a chronic illness like cancer.
Right on! Im there with you. Make sure you get a good K as well.
A true expert would not deny the dermatologists. As a person who has scars on my body from the removal of pre-cancerous (thank the Lord) skin lesions, I say be careful with the sun.
And, FWIW, several years ago my GP advised me to stop taking calcium supplements as my blood work was showing abnormally high, and potentially dangerous, calcium levels. The Dr. said most people get adequate calcium through a healthy diet.
No indication in the excerpt if this is about D1 or D3.
When I take Vitamin D, I feel better. No doubt it works. So it isn’t just bone health.
K2 with D3 also apparently helps.
I have taken 5000 units of D3 daily (mornings) for many years. Also calcium and multivitamin (dinner).
I have enjoyed very good health. I did have a 2-day stomach flu last winter, but can’t remember any other bouts of “illness”, going back for over a decade or longer.
I also think the D helps to level out moods for me and/or steadier energy levels. When tested for bone density several years ago (age in upper 50s), the doctor told me my bones should last until I’m about 200 years old.
Earlier I read that the 400IU that they used to recommend is not sufficient, you need more, like 1000-2000 IU.
Your doctor can order to have your level measured in a blood test.
Most people have too low levels of vit. D, not too high.
I agree.
Noting that I am not a dietitian, please consider the following.
The article failed to distinguish between D2 and D3, D3 being important in our diet.
Ergocalciferol (D2), the stuff in milk.
Note that skin produces D3 when exposed to UVB in sunlight. Because of sunlight issues, D3 supplements are important for people who work in buildings, also areas that dont get as much sunlight.
Note that D3 produced in skin is not immediately bioavailable. In fact, if you shower every day then youre probably washing your natural D3 down the drain, another reason for D3 supplement.
Corrections, insights welcome.
