Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation
Human Life Review ^ | 03 Feb 1983 | Ronald Reagan

Posted on 09/23/2018 2:36:14 PM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY of Roe v. Wade is a good time for us to pause and reflect...The consequences of this judicial decision are now obvious: since 1973, more than 15 million unborn children have had their lives snuffed out by legalized abortions. That is over ten times the number of Americans lost in all our nation’s wars.

Make no mistake, abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution... Nowhere do the plain words of the Constitution even hint at a “right” so sweeping as to permit abortion up to the time the child is ready to be born. Yet that is what the Court ruled.

Abortion concerns not just the unborn child, it concerns every one of us. The English poet, John Donne, wrote: “… any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

Margaret Heckler, soon after being nominated to head the largest department of our government, Health and Human Services, told an audience that she believed abortion to be the greatest moral crisis facing our country today. And the revered Mother Teresa, who works in the streets of Calcutta ministering to dying people in her world-famous mission of mercy, has said that “the greatest misery of our time is the generalized abortion of children.”

Despite the formidable obstacles before us, we must not lose heart. This is not the first time our country has been divided by a Supreme Court decision that denied the value of certain human lives. The Dred Scott decision of 1857 was not overturned in a day, or a year, or even a decade.

Respect for the sacred value of human life is too deeply engrained in the hearts of our people to remain forever suppressed.

The real question today is not when human life begins, but, What is the value of human life?

Thank you for referencing that article CondoleezzaProtege. Please note that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

”… more than 15 million [??? emphasis added] unborn children have had their lives snuffed out by legalized abortions."

Noting that CDC numbers start from 1970, I challenge that 15 million figure.

"Between 1970 and 2014, CDC reports nearly 44.5 million legal induced abortions."Abortion statistics in the United States

Regarding so-called legality of Roe v. Wade, Roe v. Wade is an ongoing scandal imo.

Yes. You are correct to tally the numbers this way. The above essay was written by Ronald Reagan in 1983. So a lot less time had passed since Roe.

Mea Culpa.

I stopped reading when I saw a number that I perceived was grossly understated.

No worries.

That so many millions of lives have been directly impacted by abortion attests to the current impasse our country is in with regard to Judge Kavanaugh’s appointment.

In my view, the situation we’re in is indicative of just how much havoc abortion culture has wreaked on the souls of so many in this nation. What we are seeing now are the spiritual disturbances coming to surface, into the light.

From day 1, this has been about one thing and one thing only. And that is abortion.

Agreed. And the abortion industry pretends that most people easily move on after abortion. Which of course is completely false. They wouldn’t be acting the way they are if that was true.

To me, the evidence that human life begins at conception is the DNA. The fetus’s DNA is certainly human DNA and it is different from the mother, the father or anyone else. Distinct human DNA = distinct human life. All the other arguments about abortion go away if there is agreement on when life begins.
