Syria Shoots Down a Russian Military Plane, and Moscow Blames Israel

Syrian antiaircraft missiles shot down a Russian military aircraft carrying 15 service members off the Syrian coast Monday night, the Russian Defense Ministry said. Moscow angrily blamed the Israeli military for what appeared to be a case of friendly fire, saying the Iraelis were conducting air raids in the area and had given only a minute’s warning, too little for the Il-20 surveillance plane to fly out of harm’s way.

The Russian Ministry of Defense says they ‘detected’ the milliles coming from French warships in the Mediterranean. I assume in 2018 they have the technology to do that.

What evidence is there that Syria is responsible?

More fake news.

That seems rather generous if you ask me.

No warning gives the attacking aircrews a better chance of success.

Unless they’re talking about the Russian spy plane.

I believe international law or some international agreement calls for much more advanced notice.

If Russia, China, Iran, etc., did that to us you would be up in arms, correct?

Why, no.

If we were operating in a war zone (i.e. close enough to the action for SAMs to get to us) then we assume the risk of taking a hit.

I am unaware of any international agreements for a party in a conflict to telegraph their punches to anyone.

Hague Regulations, dating back to the 1800s. However they make exception for surprise attacks.

The Israeli’s are too nice.

A one minute warning give people enough time to run for their lives.

Or they can choose to remain and fire missiles back...

I’ll try to check for the both of our edification.

I’m pretty sure I read some time ago that we (USA) gave Russia notice we were going to bomb somewhere (Syria I think) and we didn’t want to have allies or neutral parties part of the collateral damage.

I think it is at least an accepted courtesy to warn those you do not want to be in harms way, for whatever reason.

Color me cynical, but I would expect that any raid warning given to Russia would be in the Syrian air defense inbox within minutes.

Seems Israel agrees...

Then why give any warning at all?
