The Nastiest Feud in Science
The Atlantic ^ | Sept 2018 | BIANCA BOSKER

Posted on 08/12/2018 7:56:38 PM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

...But Keller doesn’t buy any of it. “It’s like a fairy tale: ‘Big rock from sky hits the dinosaurs, and boom they go.’ And it has all the aspects of a really nice story,” she said. “It’s just not true.”

...Keller’s resistance has put her at the core of one of the most rancorous and longest-running controversies in science. “It’s like the Thirty Years’ War,” says Kirk Johnson, the director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Impacters’ case-closed confidence belies decades of vicious infighting, with the two sides trading accusations of slander, sabotage, threats, discrimination, spurious data, and attempts to torpedo careers. “I’ve never come across anything that’s been so acrimonious,” Kerr says. “I’m almost speechless because of it.” Keller keeps a running list of insults that other scientists have hurled at her, either behind her back or to her face. She says she’s been called a “bitch” and “the most dangerous woman in the world,” who “should be stoned and burned at the stake.”

...Although Keller’s father enlisted his brood to tend the land—working them so hard that a neighbor once reported him—the family constantly teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. To put meat on the table, Keller’s mother once stewed up one of the cats the family kept on the farm. Another time, she gave an older daughter some fresh “mutton” as a gift—in actuality, Keller’s butchered pet dog.

That family should rightfully be cursed.

Interesting, but CAGW seems to be WAY more controversial.

I don’t think I could ever eat a dog or a cat I owned. Someone else’s pet is another matter...if I were hungry enough.

“Be grateful.”

I am. I suppose, like anyone, I would do what I had to, to survive.

The Keller family sound like a right pack of total weirdos. If they had to kill their cats and dog to feed their kids, Old Man Keller should have kept his darn lederhosen ZIPPED.

Maybe settled science isn’t settled science.

I wonder if they have such fights about the Permian extinction.

Reading about Shackleton’s being stranded in the ice.
The dogs were pets of the crew, they developed a workaround as the dogs were consumed.

Those who set up an alternate reality can't afford to allow even the tiniest hint of actual reality to sneak in.

It's like that scene in Blazing Saddles where they let a jet contrail be visible in the distant blue sky. Turns the whole thing into a joke.

Just like the Jets and the Sharks, and not so much ‘footwork’.

For this fight, you find a ‘friendly’ journalist get your findings spread around.
With better funding, they would hire Fusion GPS.

Then there's this (posted by ETL a few days ago in another thread) - http://news.berkeley.edu/2015/04/30/did-dinosaur-killing-asteroid-trigger-largest-lava-flows-on-earth/

Could they both be right?

The above link was posted in a thread stating that earthquakes on one side of the planet could trigger earthquakes on the other side: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3677932/posts

I read the piece. What I saw were two groups of arrogant atheists yelling at each other and being More-Scientist-Than-Thou. I think BOTH of them are full of s#!t.

"..Shackleton’s..."

THAT's a totally wild story of complete human survival.

I find that few today could accomplish same.
