Emerald Isle, N.C. One person drowned Wednesday afternoon after swimming near Emerald Isle, despite red flag conditions.
Authorities said a 41-year-old man was pulled from the ocean near the 9000 block of Emerald Isle at about 2:30 p.m., but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Emergency personnel were called to four water rescues within less than one hour Wednesday afternoon as a result of people ignoring the red flag warnings, authorities said.
Video from Emerald Isle showed beach-goers on Wednesday forming a human chain to rescue swimmers from the rough surf. It is unclear if the video was taken before or after the drowning.
Authorities said that red flag warnings remain in place along all 12 miles of the towns beach because of dangerous surf conditions. Members of the public have been warned to stay out of the water since Sunday and red flag conditions are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future, town officials said

I met a deadly beach, and had the good fortune not to marry her.
These sad outcomes would have been avoided if the principals had used common sense.
Can't get away from it.
Unless you're geo-located with Algor.

My parents had a beach place at Emerald Isle. When my son was 3 years old he almost drowned and was taken to the hospital by emergency personnel. When we got to the hospital the emergency personnel said they had to go back out, there was another drowning. A father and a son didn’t make it that day. Thanks for the post, if it makes even one person aware of the dangers of rip currents it is valuable.
‘if it makes even one person aware of the dangers of rip currents it is valuable.’
the danger of rip tides is commensurate with the experience of the swimmer...it should be common knowledge that one should not venture into water above the chest, and that if a backwash is strong enough to knock one of his feet, get out of the water...
of course, the experienced swimmer also knows that regardless of the strength of the backwash, if influx of the successive waves is much stronger...hopefully, beach towns don’t go crazy and prevent swimming without lifeguards present...talk about repressive dictators, bored lifeguards take the prize...
“I met a deadly beach, and had the good fortune not to marry her.”
Clever play on words, lol.
I’m sorry. I didn’t know there was a limit or a restriction.
Thanks /s..... you left her for someone else to marry... I’m all for forced forehead tattoos on deadly beaches, the younger they get it done, the better..
I posted the same story line. waiting for the warden to show up.. lol. I’m new here.
LOL, no worries, but you’re right someone will likely show up to correct you. I am newly returned....so again, no worries. We do the best we can.
RIP.
I am a terrible swimmer. For some reason, I just never mastered swimming. If I ever drown, it will almost certainly involve foul play, sinking in a ship, or being swept along in rushing floodwaters during a storm. I am never tempted to go out into deep water.
Yes, thanks. I heard today that this gentleman who drowned was trying to save another swimmer in trouble.
“I am never tempted to go out into deep water.”
I am a good swimmer but I don’t go out into the ocean at all.
