The FED should be radically changed — they need to be audited and answer to the Secretary of the Treasury. They are unconstitutional as hell.

While you're at it, the Agriculture dept, the Energy dept., the EPA, the Education dept, The Legal Services Corporation, the NSA, the Housing and Urban Development Agency, and every other alphabet agency. Remember this, from 1776? "He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance." Is it not about time to end these worthless agencies?

Friends mom way back in college days was a chicken inspector and she would tell you stories.

No thanks, abolish the FBI and ATF instead.

Actually, I’d rather eat untainted food and know that if I must take a drug, it will be safe and (at least somewhat) effective.

All of this government usurpation of our food arguably got started with the book "The Jungle", by Upton Sinclair
This is true. Sinclair described how slaughterhouses at the time would process disease animals, put chemicals in the meat to mask the taste, and sell it as normal. Plus appalling (and deeply unhealthy) sanitary conditions. This book led to a government fact-finding mission which confirmed the meat-packing allegations were largely true. I'm pretty far over to the libertarian side of things, but I absolutely support government enforcement of truthful labels for food and basic sanitary conditions. So put me in the "reform and loosen" rather than the "abolish" camp.

And one of the biggest employers of illegal aliens is the meat packing industry.

My husband worked (and roomed) with some Mexicans, on an out of town job, once. He said they and their habits were filthy and that you couldn’t even use the shower, or the kitchen, after they got done with it. He and the other guys finally kicked them out and told the foreman they refused to room with them.
On the other hand, I have a friend who is Mexican, and she is scrupulously clean.

I don’t want my chicken so amped up on hormones that it does not jump out of the oven and run around my kitchen. The FDA is needed to keep it under control.

I’m not an anarchist so I have little problem with government providing the basics ie infrastructure and protection from hazardous chemicals and fraud. The FDA is good if it sticks with protecting the general health and safety of the country. That doesn’t include free abortion drugs btw.

The FDA justifies the years-long process to approve drugs faster than European countries because their bureaucratic foot-dragging in the 1960s allowed the US to escape the thalidomide disaster that befell Europe.

The FDA serves an essential purpose and at one time this was very good. The FDA has become too powerful and actually oppressive in its rules and regulations. We need the FDA but its powers need to much limited.

That is true. However at the same time they delayed the use of Beta Blockers in the USA by years. Europe had them and used them. Many thousands of lives were lost because of this. Far more lives than the Thalidomide tragedy. The problem with the FDA is they use to much caution. Oddly an exception has been the fast tracking of drugs to tread HIV. In this case the FDA did not err on the side of caution and this was a good decision. However this decision was due to well organized political correctness and pressure.
