They have to be. They can’t get their constituents to pick up their trash, clean up after themselves or enforce litter control.
The left hates straws because straws make it easier for you to drink something, and therefore adds convenience to your life.
You are an American, and the left feels that you do not deserve convenience because of imperialism, racism, colonization, sexism, heteronormatism, LGBTXYZism, ism-ism and more.
So annoying you is restorative social justice. Or some such bull$#!^.
They lie, of course. That isn’t the real reason. The West contributes less then 1% of all plastic waste that is in the ocean, with Asia and Africa contributing 99%.
I don’t believe that it going world wide all of a sudden is just coincidental.
I guess plastic does not quickly decompose as compared to paper straws, but the real reason is that the Progs can keep the “environment” in the news cycle.
The oceans has literally tons of downed airplanes, warships, tankers, pirate ships, and shipping containers.
BTW, straws are made from petroleum by-products, which...oil occurs naturally in the ocean.
With so many items made from plastic and packed in plastic, why, indeed? And why this sudden concern? Plastic straws have been around for eons.
Do a lot of people use straws? I can’t remember the last time I saw anybody using one. Usually you do not use a straw to drink beer or coffee.

Some woman read a statistic about how many plastic straws were thrown away every year.
The number being huge triggered her over-active 'hyper concern amygdala' and she screamed, 'WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!'
It became her duty to 'save the world' (from plastic straws).
She then convinced similar non-critical thinking idiots to also, 'save the world' (from plastic straws).
Everyone wants to save the world. Don't you want to save the world?
What better way to save the world than by forcing others to save the world for you.
