Living in Holland maybe they didn’t get the warning as soon as those in Germany, about half of whom got away.

To play on opening our borders, that’s why.

Since when is news propaganda?
Since forever:
The natural disposition is always to believe. It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough. The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing.

The man whom we believe is necessarily, in the things concerning which we believe him, our leader and director, and we look up to him with a certain degree of esteem and respect. But as from admiring other people we come to wish to be admired ourselves; so from being led and directed by other people we learn to wish to become ourselves leaders and directors . . .

The desire of being believed, the desire of persuading, of leading and directing other people, seems to be one of the strongest of all our natural desires. - Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759)

. . . but especially since the (pre-Civil War) advent of the Associated Press. The AP “wire” is a virtual meeting of all major US journalism outlets - unending since the memory of living man (or even his father) ran not to the contrary. And anyone who thinks that that has not, and does not, result in a conspiracy against the public is naive as a baby:
People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary. - Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations (1776)
The “conspiracy against the public” produced by journalists’ unending collusion simply makes journalists “more so.” Journalists are negative and superficial, for commercial reasons summarized in “If it bleeds, it leads” and “Always make your deadline.” Their collusion via the AP means that all journalists promote the fatuous conceit that “journalism is objective.” Since we know that journalism is negative, the claim that "journalism is objective" is a claim that "negativity is objectivity.” And yet “the conceit that negativity is objectivity” is a very serviceable definition of cynicism.

Journalism is cynical about society and, concomitantly, naive about government:

SOME writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.

Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil . . . - Thomas Paine, Common Sense (1776)

Journalism’s cynicism toward society makes it an engine of pro-government - actually, pro-socialist - propaganda.

Keep in mind the times. The U.S. at that time had a very restrictive Policy, one we had from about 1920 to 1965. The Jewish population in Europe were looking to go anywhere at a certain point then and there were just limited options.

Even England was not taking in anyone and everyone. The only other option was Palestine and it was under British control then and immigration to it was very controlled also.

So the bottom line was there were few places the Jews could immigrate to to get away from the Nazi’s in Europe.

Of course the U.S. could have changed their policies during the war but they didn’t. There are several stories of Jewish families that tried to leave on ships only to find that no nation would let them dock and eventually they ended up back in Europe.

It’s a long sad story but the story of Anne Frank is just another in a long line of tragedies that happened during the war.
