Richmond, Va., Panel Recommends Removing Jefferson Davis Statue

Just weeks before last year's "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va., Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney announced a new commission to recommend "how to best tell the real story" of the Confederate-era and other statues on Monument Avenue, a tree-lined street known as one of the city's tourist destinations.

Then the white nationalists gathered in Charlottesville, some 70 miles away. They rallied around a statue of Robert E. Lee that had been slated for removal during an August weekend that turned violent.

The next week, Stoney added to the Richmond group's charge: The commission would examine the possible removal or relocation of monuments.

"I live in a city where 25 percent of the residents live under the poverty line," Stoney told NPR's Weekend Edition at the time. "The vestiges of Jim Crow live with us every single day."

On Monday, the commission released a 117-page report outlining their recommendations — including one to remove a statue of the Confederacy's president, Jefferson Davis, in the city that was its capital. The monument stands out on a street lined with them: the bronze statue by Edward Valentine depicts Davis, arm outstretched, standing in the center of a semi-circle of columns. It was unveiled in 1907 at a reunion of thousands of Confederate veterans, according to newspaper archives.

Christy Coleman, CEO of the American Civil War Museum and co-chair of the commission, says that Davis' statue "had a particular significance for the Richmond community that participated in the process." Thousands of community members came to the panel's various public sessions and wrote to them to provide input.

I hope somebody from Richmond will look into the lives of those persons who are dead set to destroy our history and turn this country into Orwell’s 1984.

The liberal busybodies can "recommend" what they want, state law doesn't allow its removal.

Mayor Stoney invokes Jim Crow while he extends the Richmond tradition of electing Black mayors. Oh the irony. I used to love living in Richmond, but now can’t wait for the day (2 years) when I leave.

"vestiges of Jim Crow live with us..."

AND what political party is affiliated with that?

Alex, I'll take 'What is the DNC' for $100.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing! All J Davis had to do was order Lee and other commands to fight a mobile defense in depth, and it would’ve been a different outcome.

“Get rid of that looser and put up a statue of the winner PDJT”

So you are thinking the political leadership in Richmond today may erect a statue of President Trump?

You made more sense when you were drinking.

It would be far better to remove anyone who wants to remove the statue.

May I recommend Venezuela as a cheery destination for them to relocate to.

"The vestiges of Jim Crow, conceived and implemented by Democrats, live with us every single day."

Please, cite some examples of Jim Crow vestiges to which Democrats still cling and perpetrate? I'm sure the Mayor could describe a few if he really tried...

None have been removed in Virginia. Charlottsville came up with the same thing. They haven’t been able to remove them. Plus the judge ruled recently that not only can the council be held liabel, but the individuals on their council can as well. The commission means nothing.

Mayor Stoney should look in the mirror and simply ask, “Who has run/ruined Richmond for the past 100 years?”

If he answers “Democrats”, then he is being honest. If he says “racists” without saying “Democrats, then he is half honest.

If he says nothing, then he knows he’s a coward.

#5: "Look at the make up of who is in charge of the city and it is no surprise"

The real map of America resembles a Swiss cheese: there is the substance, and then there are the holes. It is civilization pockmarked by dangerous jungle enclaves.

In all the periodic stories about Monument Avenue, I have never seen one in which the views of residents along the avenue itself, or in the surrounding neighborhood, are consulted. Monument Avenue is one of the most beautiful streets in America. The lefties would be happy to destroy it in the name of virtue signaling and as an exercise in bullying for its own sake. Gotta show who's boss, etc. But if you polled residents of the avenue itself, I'll bet 90 percent-plus would strongly favor keeping it intact. The figure will be less than 100 percent only because Monument Avenue is close enough to VCU to have a student infestation.

The City of Richmond is 50 percent black. The Richmond metro area is two thirds white and about 30 percent black. The city has some ugly dog-in-the-manger politics, with a racialist faction that is always looking for issues around which to mobilize and that is willing to trash the place in the name of vengeance. Add white liberals to the mix and it's a dangerous combination.
