Peso falls after leftist wins Mexican presidency in a landslide

The Mexican peso fell against the U.S. dollar on Monday after voters in the second-largest Latin American economy overwhelmingly voted in favor of a far-left candidate as its new president.

The peso pulled back 0.6 percent versus the dollar, erasing slight gains seen on Sunday, to trade at 20.032.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, better known by his initials AMLO, received more than 50 percent of the vote in an election held Sunday. His two closest rivals only got about 23 percent and 15 percent of the vote respectively.

His victory, however, could lead to tougher negotiations between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada on a new NAFTA deal at a time when trade relations between the three countries are rising.

Mexico has as many or more natural resources, more arable land, and better overall climate than do we. It’s not all burnt over desert. What they also have is extreme political corruption, drug kingpins, sexual slavery, and an utter disregard for human life and unalienable rights.

You mean Mexico should be richer than us? I think so.

Build the wall.

Venezuela North. The socialist dogma has been spread to Mexico, and with no better outcome than it had for any other place it has been tried.

Maybe the Mexican people would flee, but again, not much if anything has changed for the campesino in his adobe hacienda. But now maybe the drug cartels will have a formal seat in the government councils, rather than just having to rely on violence and threats of violence to gain the obedience of the various levels of government power.

Agree. The Communist a-hole the Mexicans just elected will be little more than a pawn of the drug lords and human trafficking kingpins, who now will run what’s left of the country. Same relationship as Obama to Soros.

Throw in open borders, and you have the Democrat agenda and talking points for the 2018 mid-term election.

Venezuela North.

Indeed, but with the potential of a 1960's North Vietnam on our border.

Mexico should have the greatest wealth per capita on earth. Tyranny is not only a brute, but a thief.

Yes. As you go north from Mexico City, Mexico becomes a desert, which is one reason why Mexico didn’t populate what is now our southwest, when Mexico owned it in the 1830s. Central Mexico’s climate is wonderful. They can grow crops year-round. But Mexico has been continually cursed with horrible politics.

I once watched a show on the Mexican Public TV—the worst 11 Mexicans in history. More than half were presidents!

As for the peso. When I was clearing out my mom’s apartment, I found lots of Mexican money. She loved Mexico and spent lots of time there. Thousands of pesos. But that was before the inflation of the 80s hit and I found my thousands of pesos could be converted for something like 15¢. So it’s starting to happen again.
