Vanity: Looking for some first-hand images of Auschwitz.
My addled brain | Myself

Posted on 06/20/2018 4:31:31 AM PDT by Spacetrucker

My daughter is an avid history buff and has, over the past few years, done quite a bit of reading on the Nazi concentration camps. I would love to take her to some of these sites some day, but for now all I can do is get some first-hand pics of someone else's visit. If anyone has been to any of the concentration camp memorial sites and has pics they could share it would be greatly appreciated.

I find your request a bit strange and more than macabre.

You can find images on the internet......

....the Dems and liberals certainly can as they mock our President with taunts during this Dem/liberal made ‘child crisis’ on the border

Personally, rather than images, I think your daughter should read some first account books to give her the true meaning of the Holocaust.....
....ie.....NIGHT by Ellie Wiesel....

My father was part of the quartermaster corps that attended to Bergen Belsen after the liberating infantry had moved on.

He was so disturbed by what he had seen there (he was 21 at the time) he would not talk about it. I can imagine that Aushwitz was far worse.

Tell your daughter to go back into the OLD history books. She can access many through google books.

Always best to go to the most official sources:

The site is awkward. Here’s the front door:

Go to google books. Examine the OLD history books and look at the pre-war years.

Look up the locations on Google Maps, click on the site, click on photos from the site, mission completed.

Take her to the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem. While there, watch the short film entitled “Night and Fog.” Since you mentioned you cannot get there at this time, on the interwebby, search for “Night and Fog.” Show her that.

I’m forewarning you, if you find the movie and show it to her, neither of you will ever be the same.

I don’t know where you live, but if you can get your daughter to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC she can get informed, educated and much more.

It’s a daunting experience......but worth the go.

PS
You didn’t say how old your daughter is???

Some info and images are not, imo, age appropriate for children or young teens ( my grand couldn’t handle this)

...so please keep this in mind.

I live in Warsaw - trust me, the pictures will not convey anything more than you can google

The difference is when you VISIT.

Even if you visit in bright summer, there is something eerie about the place. you can sense death there

Google it for pictures, but fly here for a visit -- you can get cheap charter tickets and for Americans its visa on arrival

If your daughter wants to really do the World-War II tour of Poland I would suggest the following itinerary:

As others have mentioned you could try Google images, be careful of the sources, or go to sources like Yad Vashem, the US Holocaust Museum, or Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum sites directly. However it sounded like you were looking for current pics from visitors. If so try travel sites like Tripadvisor They've got about 15,000 of Auschwitz uploaded by tourists.

I was always a history geek, even as a young kid. I knew a little of the Holocaust in an oblique way from reading about WW II.

But it wasn’t until watching the TV movie “QB VII” when I was 13 that I began to research it and learn more.

I was horrified by what I learned. It kept me up at night and sometimes made it hard to concentrate on schoolwork, etc.

I would say that is about as young as I would expose kids to the full story of the Holocaust, or Auschwitz in particular.

One of the uplifting events that occurred was the Jewish slave labor sabotaging Nazi armaments. Many an American GI owes their lives to artillery shells that were duds, or rifle misfired, because the Jewish slave labor messed something up when the guards weren’t looking.
