“Pit bull roulette” killed 38,000 other animals in 2017
Animals24-7 ^ | January 17, 2018 | Merritt Clifton

“Pit bull roulette” cost the lives of 38 humans, plus nearly 13,000 dogs, 5,000 cats, and more than 20,000 farmed animals in 2017––and, only two weeks into 2018, has already killed Happy Hound Hotel boarding kennel worker Laura Williams Ray, of Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, and three-year-old Rylee Marie Dodge, of Duncan, Oklahoma, along with many dozens of animals.

Overall, pit bulls accounted for 68% of the human dog attack deaths in 2017, 88% of the human disfigurements, 92% of the dogs killed by other dogs, 94% of the dogs seriously injured by other dogs, 96% of the cats killed by dogs, and 74% of the farmed animals killed by dogs.

The more living beings to whom a pit bull is exposed, or the more pit bulls are part of the scenario, the higher the odds that one or more living beings will be killed or injured.

One pit bull in 80 kills an animal or human in any given year

Since there are only about 3.7 million pit bulls in the U.S. at any given time, the odds start at about one chance in 80 that any given pit bull will kill a human or animal in any given year––compared to about one chance in 24,666 that any given dog of any other breed will kill any pet or farmed animal.

That’s right: the odds are 308 times higher that a pit bull will kill a human, pet, or farmed animal in any given year than that a dog other than a pit bull will.

Multiply that one chance in 80 by the 10-year average lifespan of a dog, and about one pit bull in eight will become a killer––if the pit bull lives a normal lifespan.

No, pit bulls are great. Especially with children. They LOVE children.

I’ll give them a pass on the cats, as that’s the price cats pay for getting to roam free (and I am a cat lover). However, assuming that most of the dogs killed were not feral, that is like taking a family member away from many people. I’d rather not have more government regulations on dogs, but it will head there if this doesn’t get under control.

Wow, I had not known that pit bulls were responsible for such a high number and percentage of attacks. I remember a few years ago, I visited the local animal shelter in L.A. 95% of the animals there were either pit bulls or chihuahuas. One lady was dropping off a pit bull when I was there, and the thing must’ve weighed close to 200 lbs, and its head looked to be the size of a cow’s. I was literally afraid to even be in the same building with that thing.

I very much wish that I allowed myself to indulge in black humor, irony, and sarcasm when posting, but it would get out of hand very quickly. Thank you for doing so for me.

Too many “dog parents” and not enough dog owners? The bully breeds require strong hands, solid and consistent training, and exercise. Emphasis on solid and consistent training. They do tend to get out of their heads when the prey drive kicks in, but that can be ameliorated with the above mentioned training.

Pit bulls are too strong and will fight to kill at a moments notice, and have unknown triggers to set them off. They’re like old time explosives...great for certain things, but too unstable to carry around. And if they go off, (like a pit bull can) goodbyesville.

Pit Bull math: one Pit Bull + one 99mm = problem solved.

99mm? Yes, and your house - AND your neighbors house - "solved" as well.

My experience with pits indicates that, if not raised by violent d**ks, they are just large slobbery lap cats who will let you know if someone is at the door.

Thank you for pointing the cat issue out; I believe it to be valid, and always treated my cats accordingly.

I hope very much that you read the complete article.

When I began to research this issue, the numbers surprised me, and still do.

I am beginning to work on verifying them myself. So often, the information one seeks is available, but when it is all pulled together in one place, the patterns appear.

I love my pit bull and she loves me. Ruby is seven years old and gets pushed around by our 10 lb. cat. She has been recently diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy which is the canine equivalent of Lou Gehrig's disease. Her hind legs are gradually losing their strength and in a matter of months I will have to euthanize her.
I'll let all you haters know when it happens and you can throw a party. Until then, wallow in your ignorance.

Otherwise, Coquille, Oregon would be awash in blood.

Other dogs have gone after my 1 year old lab 3 times. In every instance it was a pit bull. The last one I jumped on top of, wrapped my hands around its throat and dug my thumbs in so deep I swear they were almost pressed up against its spine.

I’d prefer not to have to do that again. Hopefully my ccw will come through in the next month or so. Once it does if a pit bull attacks me or mine when we’re out in the park or wherever, I’ll just shoot it on the spot.

When I began to research this issue, the numbers surprised me, and still do.

Just for kicks, I decided to check on the number of cats and dogs hit and killed by cars. 5.4 million cats, and 1.2 million dogs. That's a LOT of dogs getting into the road. Of course, differences abound. Cars are everywhere an many dogs instinctively chase them. Plus, we can compare pit bull kills vs. other breeds. The numbers are enough out of whack that it is NOT just the owners.

Yes. But not always, and the two issues heterodyne.

TANSTAAFL, indeed. The numbers are too high. I have been posting articles on this subject for some time now. Thank you.
