Mom’s scream must have really transfixed the bear’s ears for him to drop the kid and run.

Black bears were never un-introduced to CO. They have been here all along.

I assume the 5 year old snuck out. You do your best as a parent to keep your kids safe, but if a 5 year old has never unlocked a door and gone out at night, it is easy to believe it would never happen. Then the little child thinks Fido is in trouble, and of course in her innocence and lack of wisdom, she is going to check on Fido.

I really don’t think this is the Moms fault and I really don’t think Mom was aware of her child being outside until the screaming began. If anything, it is good she heard the screaming. If she was a heavy sleeper, the girl would have been eaten by now.

Nothing in the article says the mother let the child out or even know the child got out.

Tell that to the family of 11-year-old Samuel Evan Ives of Pleasant Grove, Utah, who was camping with his family .. when a bear slashed through the family tent, then pulled him out in his sleeping bag. The bear killed the youngster.

“We’re trying to make sense of this very tragic event,” grandfather Eldon Ives said. “It’s something that just doesn’t make sense. It’s like a bad dream. We’re still struggling with how to grieve... Some things you’re prepared for, but we weren’t prepared for news that our grandson and child was killed by a bear. That’s one of the hardest things we’re struggling with.”

The boy’s body was found about 400 yards from the tent, in the direction of another campsite where a bear sighting had been reported earlier in the weekend.

Government officials failed to warn the public that a dangerous bear was in the area and had attacked other campers.

“Sam’s death was 100 percent preventable,” the boy’s mother, Rebecca Ives, told The Salt Lake Tribune. “The reason that we were so enraged when this happened was not because a bear attacked and killed our son, it was because the federal government and the state had been notified that they had a black bear out there that needed to be put down ... They failed to act and the result was that my son was killed.”

I have searched for other articles on this story and it is clear the girl ventured out into the yard in Grand Junction CO on her own while her mother was sleeping.

The mother woke up to hearing a commotion in the yard and went out to investigate. It was only then that she saw her screaming daughter being dragged by a bear. Fortunaly, her mother screamed for some reason — perhaps raw fear. Maybe she was screaming to scare the bear? Who knows. Either way it worked.

What is clear is that the 5 year old girl snuck out on her own. To be sure, the mother will probably now install 6-foot high locks on all the doors.

45 caliber bear deterrent.

8 large bullet holes would slow down his eating habits.

Does not look like it was the mother’s fault. Parents have to sleep sometime.

High locks on all the doors may be a problem during a fire or home invasion if kids need to escape. Plus windows can be opened.

Too many predatory bears. Colorado did not have this problem before the invading - liberals brought in their big city politics. Recently : Not only banning the spring hunting season. Other issues, too.

I have a kid like that. Took the keys to the mercedes when she was 3 when i was on the phone. Followed her out there. Had to fight her out of the driver’s seat. She had places to go

I never took my eyes off her. People gave me so much crap for that too

Any house we lived in, hotel or home we visited id have to batten down

I put chain locks up high on every door, set the alarm

I never let her even walk to the mail box alone.

She would have gone outside middle of the night

“5 yr old going out doors st 230 am? Mom hasn’t done a very good job”

In a couple of years Orchard Mesa will be Tijuana del Norte, with gunshots and sirens all night every night.

Unless our president rids us of these illegal savages.

I have raised four children some living near a pond Never did I have one get out at night. All my doors were alarmed so they if anyone went out in the middle of the night (or came in) I would know instantly. In addition I had Slide locks at the top of all doors and several windows. Windows were securely locked and not accessible to a five year old. Keeping a child safe takes forethought and care. I am sorry this mom learned that too late.

I had friend that had to pull plugs on his chainsaw the lawn mower and his tiller. He found his small son trying to get the chainsaw running. He asked him what he was doing. Boy replied “gonna cut some wood dad”. Boy was 6 or so. The country rural areas ain’t a petting zoo. Let things populate and deplete the food sources with developments. Natures gonna eat. Mom needs a pump shotgun and 00 buck. Greenies suck.

I’ve had visitors ask me why on earth I wear a gun on my property. I tell them bears and wolves and they laugh. Then I point to the lake and tell them that six wolves were sighted there walking across the ice two Januaries ago - my neighbor got pictures - and that the last bear attack was 20 miles from here last 4th of July. That lady got chewed up some but survived. The ones who bother to continue the debate say, “Well, you should have a dog.” “They eat dogs,” I tell them.

Actually when she figured out she could get hurt or worse she was better. I had to be honest with her
