‘Roseanne’ Holds Steady, Continues To Dominate As Season’s Top Program (tops Sunday Football)

Last night featured the return of two popular characters from the original series, Johnny Galecki’s David and Estelle Persons’ Beverly. In week 4, the revival drew a 3.4 adults 18-49 rating (Live+same day). That was even with the fast national last week despite facing new episodes of The Voice and NCIS at 8 PM this week vs. clip show/rerun last Tuesday. In total viewers, Roseanne drew 13 million viewers. Roseanne was the No.1 program on Tuesday in 18-49 and total viewers for a fourth consecutive week.

What’s more as of now, based on most current ratings that include delayed viewing, Roseanne is the #1 program on broadcast TV in total viewers (23.3 million) and adults 18-49 (6.7), well ahead of Sunday Night Football, The Big Bang Theory and Super Bowl-boosted This Is Us. The last time ABC claimed the season’s #1 show was 18 years ago in total viewers (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 1999-2000) and 24 years ago in Adults 18-49 (Home Improvement in 1993-94).

Roseanne already helped boost the debut of ABC’s new midseason comedy Splitting Up Together. Last night, the network used the revival to get more eyeballs for its other new comedy, Alex Inc., by airing the Wednesday show behind Roseanne at 8:30 PM. It didn’t take full advantage of the big lead-in, drawing a 1.2 in 18-49 and 4.8 million viewers but that still were the series’ best numbers, edging its debut. Alex Inc. was way below what The Middle did in the post-Roseanne 8:30 PM slot last week (1.9, 7.5 million).

The weaker delivery from Alex Inc. hurt ABC’s Black-ish (1.1, 4.1 million), which slipped -0.3 from last week. Splitting Up Together (1.0, 3.6 million) also was off, by -0.2, while For The People (0.6) held steady.

Still, Roseanne helped extend ABC’s winning streak as Tuesday’s top network in 18-49 (1.3 rating) to four weeks, the longest in more than a decade.

In its first season finale, the CW freshman drama Black Lightning drew a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49, even with the last eight airings. The Flash was also steady at 0.6. Both series already have been renewed for next season.

NBC’s The Voice (1.5) fell three tenths of a point vs. its last regular airing two weeks ago. Rise (0.8) was steady, and Chicago Med rose a tenth to 1.2, a ten-week-high, with 6.2 million total viewers.

NCIS hit a series low 1.1 on CBS, and Bull (1.1) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.8) were each down a tenth from their last episodes. CBS won the night in total viewers, 10.1 million.

Fox’s Lethal Weapon, LA to Vegas and New Girl all dipped a tenth vs. last week

Lethal Weapon is a GREAT tv series. I enjoy it a lot, as it takes off on the movies and twists away at new ideas. It is the best thing on broadcast TV by far in the last 5 years.

Estelle Parsons was amazing! It’s hard to believe she is 90.

I wasn’t really very entertained by Roseanne stealing groceries by failing to scan them.

so was I....it was a great joke but I felt the way they inserted it was bad.....last week they did an episode where Darlene’s daughter was stealing and it was wrong this week Roseanne steals and it is right....?....the joke still could of been done but it should of been done by another character with the person being called on the carpet for doing it.

Johnny Galecki’s David character should have a new girlfriend named “Penny”. His friends should stop by like Howard or Roger who works at a call center. They call him “Raj” for short.....
Occasionally you would see a neighbor named Sheldon being chased across the yard by a chicken.
Maybe another neighbor with binoculars named Chuck Lorre would be spotted.

"it was a great joke but I felt the way they inserted it was bad"

Perhaps if Roseanne had observed some other low-life stealing in this fashion, then the writers could have depicted her as mocking the thief while attempting to draw attention to the theft by pretending to steal merchandise.

People who steal things from stores are probably stealing all day long everywhere they go. What else are the viewers to think that Roseanne steals? Does she steal from her neighbors and friends? Does she cheat on her taxes? I simply don't get it.
