Twenty years ago today: Windows 98 crashed live on stage with Bill Gates. Let's watch it again...

Relive that sphincter-loosening Blue Screen of Death

Video Let us pause for a moment and reflect on the fact that 20 years have passed since Windows 98 memorably fell over during Bill Gates' presentation at Comdex.

A nervous-looking Chris Capossela, now chief marketing officer at Microsoft, attempted to plug a scanner into a Windows 98 PC while Gates looked on. The intent was to demonstrate the plug-and-play abilities of the upcoming OS. The result was an all-too-familiar Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), and a "whoah..." from Capossela.

Youtube Video

"That must be why we're not shipping Windows 98 yet," quipped Gates.

As Windows 10 Springwatch approaches its third week, one can only imagine that something similar must have happened somewhere in a Redmond meeting room shortly before the update was due to be unleashed on an expectant public. The latest version of the operating system, unofficially dubbed the Spring Creators Update, is unexpectedly BSoDing for some testers, we're told.

As folks await the release, comfort can be drawn from the fact that while the world may have changed in a variety of distressing ways over the past 20 years, and the Comdex IT conference itself is long defunct, Windows 10 can still point the way back to simpler and happier times.

By generating a BSoD when you least expect it. ®

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Give me 98 over 10 any day. I loath 10.

I love 10. I used to use 98 at work. It had so many memory leaks that you had to reboot every day or two just to keep it up and running. Win2k was the game changer. That’s when it left DOS and went to an NT platform.

It’s pretty amazing to think that after decades of incompetence, Microsoft still rules the office desktop computer.

They all have their Incompetent Moments. When you think about the complexity of Windows, you wonder how it can work at all. Apple had a head start because of the Unix foundation.

Picture this:

Bill Gates dies and goes to the pearly gates (no pun here). He stands before St Peter and asks, “Well, Heaven or not?” The apostle reaches done and pulls a large hour glass, flips it over and sets it on the lectern...turns around and walks away.

Does this mean they are going to be messing with 10 in an update?? Can we block it? I don’t even understand the mumbo jumbo and I’m sure as heck not going to understand it if they go messing around with it with an update...I didn’t ask for Windows 10 - it was a fluke with a site I went to and before I knew it, it was loaded...The site said I needed to UPDATE my browser to gain access to the site which wasn’t true at all.

I’m ready to disable all updates...I know people who do and they swear they haven’t encountered any problems by doing so.

I’ve liked each increment of the path I chose at home: 95 -> XP -> 7 (small dabble in 98). Can’t see going to 10. May end up leaving my 7 machines for offline activities and go to a Unix-based system next.

I suppose. But I work in an office where everyone has a Windows PC using the full Office suite including Outlook. But professional-level staff get issued work iPhones, and when we want to work on documents collaboratively, which is often, we upload them to Google Docs, and people avoid ever shutting down their computers, because it will take 20 minutes to restart. Just seems like Microsoft had had every opportunity to leverage their total dominance of the basic aspects of the modern office computing environment into something else, yet they haven’t done it. They’ve failed on mobile, the cloud, etc.

My Windows 7 needed repairing so I broke down and went with a new 10 for maybe 5 days. Pure h e double hockey sticks. Fixed my old 7 and am happy as a clam... if only it’d play my old 98 and XP games.

Now that Gates and Ballmer are gone, and have no played an active management role, I'm starting to view Microsoft as a legitimate tech company, and not just a scam selling overpriced Veg-o-matic software.

Pullleeese!!! Import data and create a crosstab spreadsheet on an iPhone? Create a 3 page Word Document on an iPhone?

All you can really do on an iPhone(any phone for that matter) is take a few notes, schedule, read, review, forward and annotate real work that was done on a real computer, probably by someone else.

Windows XP was the best operating system Microsoft ever made.

Had three PCs with it loaded onto them and none crashed. Ever.

Bill Gates is a young entrepreneur just out of Harvard B-School, fretting over his patched up version of DOS. One night, he wakes up from a troubled sleep, and the devil is standing at the foot of his bed.

“Young Gates, I can do something for you. No matter how bad your software is, I'll make billions of people buy it. It will be on most of the computers in the world. You'll be the richest man on planet Earth.”

“Well, yes, that sounds great - And, of course, the catch?”

“I want your soul.”

“I dunno,” Gates says. “I'm not keen on spending eternity in Hell...”

“Oh, now, now." Satan says. “Hell's gotten a bad rap. Here, look...” .... and the Devil pops a floppy disk into Bill's computer.

The screen fills with scenes from a tropical paradise. People are laughing, playing golf, sitting on the beach... eating from banquet tables piled high with terrific food...

“See?” Lucifer says. “It's not so bad....”

Gates thinks about it for a minute. “Well, gosh, yes, that's a lot better than I thought it would be! OK, where do I sign?”

You know what happened next. Gates goes on to be a billionaire, and we're all force to use cr@ppy Windows.

.... Gates dies, and meet the Devil at the gates of Hell. From inside, the sulfur and brimstone waft out and burn his eyes. People are screaming in pain, their skin on fire...

“Wait a minute,” Gates complains. “This isn't what you showed me!”

“Oh, that,” says the Devil as he pushed Gates into the squirming mass of screaming souls.

“That was the demo. This is the retail version.”
