Actually they had caught on. It was called coal. From the mid 1800’s to 1935 there were weeks at a time the coal cloud over England was so thick one could not see down the alley. Another type of London Fog if you will.
Worst part of winter is not the cold temps (ahem) but the illness bugs that like to thrive in those conditions plus the additional stress it puts on the body. Used to like winter as a kid but now not so much.
Didn’t some Brit want to put mirrors in space to block the sun?

Seems obvious: They should outlaw winter...
When you’ve packed your on-the-dole and elderly population into communal council flats, and then bought into “eco” schemes that make them choose between hot water and heat, an unexpected (hey, where’s the climate yer bloody computer promised??) cold winter and spring will thin the herd. Frankly, they won’t admit it but that’s the actual plan at work.
Point being, we tried a fire place once in a new home. Practically no heat unless we choked the chimney, then we had smoke in the house. We now have a modern wood burner, and the same amount of wood we wasted in a fireplace will literally roast us out.
Funny the Brits haven’t caught on.
Brit TV isn't the best source of info. - they always overemphasize the cutesy old country cottages or country manors...:^)
I spent most of January there and can tell you that most houses have central heating - not HVAC since the AC bit isn't really needed. The systems tend to be hot water radiators with a central gas heat source. For efficiency they seem to be ‘combi’ heat units that provide hot water for both radiators and domestic hot water.
The real kicker is the price of energy that makes folks keep their houses cold by US standards.
They should calculate whether 5 degrees F hotter would kill more of less citizens than 5 degrees F colder. I bet the calculations would tilt in favour of more Globul Warming.
