Jakarta is sinking by up to 25cm a YEAR as experts warn there is just a decade left to save it

he Lost City of Atlantis may be little more than a fable but for the residents of Jakarta, the watery fate of that metropolis is an all-too-real threat. That is because the Indonesian capital is sinking faster than any city on Earth, by up to 25cm per year in some places, with experts warning large parts of it will be underwater within a decade. Ministers are currently building sea walls to shield the residents from disaster, but that does little more than delay the inevitable, since it is not the ocean rising but the ground dropping that is causing the problem.

The rational thing to do is to forbid new construction and start moving the city to more stable ground. Otherwise, the impact of any inevitable tsunami or earthquake will be greatly amplified.

And draining the aquifer is responsible? I think I’d get a second opinion on that one.

Ministers are currently building sea walls ...

Wow, that's very energetic of the ministers. I assume they mean Christian ministers, since government ministers are more likely to be visiting their money in Dubai.

We know that does happen. Happened here in the US someplace out west.

reminds me when my pastor asked my dad if he’d like to help with the flood in Afghanistan. He said he’d love to, but the garden hose only reached the end of the front yard.

It can, sure. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the case here. Trust but verify. :-)

And yet Venice has been sinking for hundreds of years. Hmmm.

Come on Jarkata, quit crying about it. I’m sure the Chinese will help you move some dirt in their to raise the level of the land. They seem to be experts at this.

Oh noes - they're doomed! There's no higher ground near Jakarta where they could move!

Oh, wait...

It’s a scary and fascinating problem. Looks like there could be 4 reasons for it: draining of the aquifer, alluvial compression, load from construction, and tectonics. It’s that last one that I’m really wondering about.

Thanks C19fan. It's sliding out to sea, nothing much different than what New Orleans has been doing for a long while now.

I agree with you. Those tsunamis have to do a lot of damage to the floor. Nothing you can stop. Won’t be the first time a city was buried beneath the waters.

I believe the solution then is to build a really high wall Hall around the city.
