Robbery Prevention on my Street (Dogs or Alarm Systems)

Posted on 03/29/2018 4:05:23 PM PDT by RoosterRedux

I live in a small but growing town in the South (South Georgia to be precise). Nice street.

But on this street...a prominent local doctor was robbed and other good people.

We have a crime problem lately.

Three houses on my street have been robbed lately.

I was thinking of an alarm system, but they are so slow they seldom matter. After an alarm is set off, they call the house to inquire if it was false alarm or a fire, and then they call 911.

I have thought of smarter technology that would call me on my smart phone upon a breach so I could call 911...but lately I have thought about dogs.

Thinking of German Shepherds to be precise.

I have a nicely and tightly fenced in back yard...

Wouldn't they have a much better effect at preventing entry by burglars?

As an aside, I love animals. I have a couple of cats...and possums and coons come up at night to finish off the left over cat food.

I love dogs too but worry that if I die...what will happen to them.

Well, there it is...

A good dog is about as good as anything. Good locks, good guns, security cameras, lights, and probably other things.

No reason not to have all of them.

Do anything that makes your neighbor’s place look like an easier mark.

Less effective if confined to the backyard I would think.

Here are some security systems you might consider Along with the dogs, this would give you the best protection overall.

Poison plus meat defeats the best dog.

You can put the dogs in your will, give them a trust, etc.

If you get GSDs, they need good training. This will cost you if you cannot do it yourself.

Another option is adopting some Heinz 57s from a shelter. They tend to be more grateful and loyal. You save them from the ‘chamber’, they’ll look out for you.

I have Belgians, smaller than a German Shepherd but high energy. Met a girl a couple months ago that bought a really nice Malinois (a calm one) through Craigslist.

A good dog is a great first line of defense. Even little dogs can be good guards.

There are apps that alarm your phone when the alarm goes off. Real time.

A real loud alarm would be a good idea, even if it’s not connected to the police station. And a loud, barking dog wouldn’t hurt either.

But years ago I read an article about burglars. The author was a veteran cop. He said that a dog will dissuade an amateur. But a serious burglar won’t worry much about a dog. Because the burglar would have on him some ground meat, and a lead pipe. If one doesn’t take care of the dog, the other will.

For what it’s worth.

We have the same problem here.

My house was robbed once. Cased 3 to 4 times that I know of.

My advice all of the above. As many obstacles as you can to make them move on to an easier target.

What’s black and brown and looks good on a criminal?

A German Shepherd
Just the bark is enough

“I have thought of smarter technology that would call me on my smart phone upon a breach so I could call 911...but lately I have thought about dogs.”

Problem is, if you call the dog shooters...well, they shoot dogs. I prefer any of a variety of handguns or sawed off shotguns like a Stoeger coach gun.

Have had ADT for years and they have been pretty much on the ball. Right now, I would look into Simpli Safe.

Yarddog is correct. Good security is not an “either/or” proposition, but “all of the above.” Multiple layers, preferably completely independent, are the way to go.

An alarm system is good, and I think you can get them that will notify you first. The systems that use cell phone technology and backup batteries seem good and aren’t that expensive. But motion sensor outside lights can be completely separate. So can security cameras. As to dogs, I think the experts say a barking dog will scare off.most burglars, and a large barking dog will scare off even more.

Then you need self defense measures inside the line of security devices. A firearm, along with the training to use it defensively should be considered essential. Not only for your own safety but as your civic duty to stop criminals from preying on society at large.

Dog. One that barks. Better than an alarm. I learned this from a DC area cop.

My Malinois scares all the neighbors, including the postman.
The fences wrap around the house and only the front wall lays outside the backyard.
I have an eight camera Swann video system that I mounted in conspicuous fashion across the front yard & garage.
Nothing can approach my home without being recorded into the cloud in real time.
The camera at the front door alerts my cell phone.
Beyond that I have really good insurance.

By no means am I an expert.....but I’m curious if those robbed had guns, dogs, and or alarm systems? My limited experience is that criminals seek the easiest path. Is this robbery trend new or the new normal for your area? I agree that using whatever necessary to avoid being targeted is pertinent but I would also analyze who was robbed and what was taken to be best prepared. Good luck.
