A short film clip shot during the summer of 1898 in Paris. In French the era was known as the Belle Epoque. In America we called it the Gay 90's (before the corruption of the English language).

Ah yes, the gay 90s. Was called that before gay meant homosexual.
If I recall correctly, the Seattle worlds fair of 1962 had a gay zone, a play area for kids. Today a gay zone would have a very different meaning.
Hmmmmn.
Horses.
Mules.
No cars and no electricity = no pollution. Right?
My grandmother was 10 years of age in 1898. When she lived with us when I was child she would recall for us her Father hitching up the buggy to go to town or church.
And....NO Muzzies!
They had electricity in Paris by the late 90’s. And they also had a very efficient public sanitation service that cleared the streets of... err... transportation related pollution.
Noticing the size and speed of some of the carts, and well as the large piles of horsesh** - I can understand why the Victorians found a need to invent sidewalks.
A bunch of the wheels on the buggies are not turning. 0:15 - 0:20 is an example. Some wheels on buggies turn while others do not. Watch the spokes. Strange.
Probably because the frame rate causes the next frame to have the next spoke in the same place as the previous. Plus, a very sunny day means short exposure time, so the spokes look distinct.
One of the original reasons men wore “spats” before they became a fashion accessory, was to protect shoes from mud and other road hazards.
Could be. It just seemed odd to me. Thanks.
When my Grandmother wanted us to do something right away, she’d say “And don’t spare the horses”.
Well, at least the pollution due to the traffic was something that was real-and could be cleaned up with a shovel...
Thanks Robert A Cook PE. If you look carefully you can just make out Joni Mitchell wandering from cafe to caberet.
Looks like one Brit driving on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic.
Sometimes you will see wheels appear to go backwards. Its the frames of the motion picture film and the speed of the film that cause the optical illusion. You can get similar effect under artificial light because of the 60 hertz ( Or cycles per second. ) that house current puts out.
the urban bird population was larger because of it as well.
Find some film clips of U.s. cities up to about 1920. You will be amazed at how many horse drawn wagons, carriages, and horsemen are among the street traffic since cars were only then coming into limited mass production.
Even at the beginning of WWII, the vaunted German armored Panzer divisions were largely shock units with most transportation furnished by horses. And of course everyone still remembers the futile courage of the Polish cavalry charges against them.
Real saturation of private autos in the US didn’t come until after WWII.
I’m more amazed at how men wore coats, ties, and hats when out and about, even at baseball games. And certainly women were more modestly attired.
Those trees get another 42 years to grow and provide shade for future German troops.
