The male deliberately chased, then lay on the weaner, who struggled and squealed before wriggling free - apparently uninjured.

Elephant seals are capable of diving to 5000 feet below the surface for up to 30 minutes. Pretty incredible creatures.
Back in the early 70's, we were around 50 miles west of the Channel Islands (tuna boat) and what I thought was flotsam at first turned out to be a huge bull just floating there upright looking around until we got within 50 yards or so then he dove under and disappeared.
